Granville Central football continues milestone season

Nov. 05, 2013 @ 10:51 PM

For the seniors on the Granville Central football team, Monday was a special night.

The school celebrated its seniors as the Panthers defeated KIPP Pride, 64-36, clinching the school’s first-ever playoff berth. The 7-year-old school also celebrated its first winning season (6-4, 3-1 Tar-Roanoke).

“I’m thrilled to death for our boys,” Granville Central coach John Hammett said. “We have another game next week (before starting the playoffs); we just have to keep getting better.”

Granville Central wasted no time getting started. Quarterback Jay Parker connected with Chris Stainback for an 86-yard touchdown pass on the Panthers’ first offensive play.

Pride suited only 18 players, so it may seemed odd that it would try to wear down the Panthers.

Pride rushed the ball 27 times for 189 yards in the first half, including a 13-play opening drive that was stopped when Granville Central’s Tyler Braswell intercepted a pass in the end zone.

KaDarius Goode was Pride’s workhorse, rushing 18 times for 113 first-half yards. He finished the game with 149 yards on 21 carries.

But Granville Central’s passing game owned the day. Parker threw for 300 first-half passing yards and four touchdowns on 9 of 14 passing as the Panthers led 38-14 at half.

Parker connected with six receivers to end the game with 346 yards and six touchdowns on 13 of 20 passing.

Bryce Parrott had a big second half for Granville Central, scoring on a 25-yard rush and receptions of 4 and 26 yards. He also scored on a 14-yard reception near the end of the first half that gave the Panthers a 24-point lead.

Michael Freeman recovered a fumble for Granville Central with 1:45 left in the third quarter.

On the next Granville Central drive, Parker hooked up with Parrott for a 26-yard touchdown to all but end the game, the Panthers leading 60- 22.
