Southern runs past error-prone Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill’s opening salvo — a scripted “sky” kick — was recovered by Connor Korfas at the Southern 33.

It was all downhill from there as Southern’s Marvin Tillman picked off a Grant DeSelm pass deep in Southern territory and the Spartans began their relentless march to a 59-20 Big Eight 3-A Conference victory.

It was the first of three interceptions DeSelm (17-39-3, 197 yards) would throw on the night. Joshua Manns picked off one and Kaleb Barfield the third. Barfield returned that one 33 yards for a touchdown.

“We’re such a young team, we can’t afford to make mistakes and give up big plays,” Chapel Hill coach Issac Marsh said. “We haven’t seen this kind of speed (Southern’s) all year.”

Barfield, who also scored on a 71-yard catch and run from Southern quarterback sensation Kendall Hinton (10-13-0, 193 yards), was one of three Spartans to score a pair of touchdowns.

Jordan Brown scored on runs of 21 and 17 yards and William Cameron scored on runs of 52 and 30 yards in the second half.

Not to be outdone, Hinton ran for a seven-yard score and threw for two — Barfield’s bomb and an eight-yarder to Jason Henderson.

Maurice Trowell scored the other Southern touchdown on a 26-yard double reverse to give Southern the lead for good in the first quarter after DeSelm found Aaron Hirsch for a 16-yard score that gave Chapel Hill a 7-6 lead.

Barfield’s long TD made it 18-7 with 23 seconds left in the first quarter.

“We’re definitely clicking,” Southern coach Adrian Jones said of his offense. “We’ve got dangerous weapons and we use ‘em all. And we’ve got the triggerman (Hinton), too. We try to spread it around.”

On the night, Southern rushed for 348 yards on 34 carries with Cameron leading the way with 88 on four carries and Brown right wight him with 75 on six carries. Hinton ran four times for 55 yards.
