Evans, Riverside run past Jordan

Riverside’s triple-option offense was too complex of a problem for Jordan to solve on Friday night.

Led by 313 rushing yards from fullback Joel Evans, the Pirates racked up 461 yards on the ground in a 49-13 PAC-6 Conference victory. Evans had touchdown runs of 29, 58, and 80 yards to help sour Jordan’s homecoming festivities.

“We saw some things that they were doing defensively that we felt would give us opportunities for big plays,” Riverside coach David Hackney said. “We’re a running football team and we executed some things well tonight.”

Quarterback Diante Strothers opened the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown run just 88 seconds into the game. He finished with 90 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Riverside had 292 rushing yards in the first half alone.

“We played a good first half and a sloppy second half,” Hackney said. “Too many turnovers and miscues.”

Jordan’s offense, which struggled to move the ball until the game was out of reach, got 85 rushing yards and a touchdown from Chris Francis. Rahim Winston, the homecoming king, added 71 yards on 12 carries.

The Falcons took advantage of a Jordan Vincent fumble recovery deep in Riverside territory to tie the game at 7-7 before allowing five unanswered touchdowns. Darryl Nickerson opened the second half with a 90-yard kickoff return to give Riverside a 42-7 lead.
