In Durham, PAC-6 4-A co-leaders Northern (2-6, 2-0 PAC-6) and Hillside (5-2, 2-0 PAC-6) meet at Hillside’s Russell Blunt Stadium at 7 p.m., but Hillside is a prohibitive favorite despite Northern’s two-game win streak. The Northern-Hillside matchup is one of only two between league leaders tonight. ... In Louisburg, Tar-Roanoke 1-A Conference co-leaders Granville Central (5-3, 2-0 T-R) and Louisburg (5-3, 2-0 T-R) lace ’em up. ... At Jordan, Riverside (5-3, 2-1 PAC-6) will try to shrug off a 35-21 home loss to powerful Hillside and shouldn’t have much trouble as the Pirates visit injury-riddled Jordan (1-7, 0-2 PAC-6). Conference football season is in full swing and the two biggest games in the spotlight Friday will be Hillside at Riverside (7 p.m.) in the PAC-6 4-A and Northwood at Southern (7 p.m.) in the Big Eight 3-A Conference.

First round state volleyball playoffs are all scheduled Saturday with start times ranging from noon to 6 p.m. ... Girls' tennis qualifiers open state individual tournament play today at four sites (Greenville, Greensboro, Burlington and Reidsville).

PAC-6 opens play tonight; Big Eight leaders clash

The long non-conference season for PAC-6 4-A football teams comes to an end tonight — and it couldn’t have come at a more auspicious time for a mostly-struggling half dozen, all coming off bye weeks. In other games tonight, Big Eight 3-A Conference powers Southern and Cardinal Gibbons meet in Raleigh with a share of first place on the line. Other Big Eight matchups include Northern Vance at Chapel Hill, Cedar Ridge at co-leader Orange and Oxford Webb at Northwood.

A PERFECT STORM

Perfection is on the line tonight as 4-0 Orange travels to Pittsboro to meet 4-0 Northwood in the Big Eight 3-A Conference showdown of the season. Orange is ranked No. 8 in the state among 3-A programs and Northwood No. 25 by MaxPreps.com, the online partner of the N.C. High School Athletic Association. ...The game is one of 13 games involving area teams on tap tonight. Only three others — Greensboro Dudley at Northern, Chapel Hill at Oxford Webb and Bartlett-Yancey at Roxboro Person — will be played in the area, the rest are on the road.

Panthers cruise to homecoming win

The score was Granville Central 48, Kestrel Heights 0. Then they started the second quarter. It was announced right before the start of the second quarter that the game clock malfunctioned and that the officials would keep the time on the field. The scoreboard mysteriously kept working, though, and Granville Central kept adding points to it until the final result was 80-0 on Friday.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

“Intense” is the word Northern High coach R.J. Wilson uses to describe the Knights’ football rivalry with crosstown rival Southern which will be renewed at 7 Friday night at Durham County Memorial Stadium. Southern alum and coach, Adrian Jones, says the Northern rivalry is more special to him than his players — “Hillside came in and took over the rivalry for the players,” Jones said. “But the game means a lot to me and I talk to my players about it a lot.” The rivalry has involved emotional investment with little return for the Knights of late. Northern has lost 10 straight in the series, winning its last game in 2002, according to Jones. ... Game-by-game breakdowns of all of Friday night's area football games.
