Tar Heel baseball stops Elon on road

ELON — Parks Jordan had three hits and drove in three runs as North Carolina defeated Elon 12-6 Wednesday night at Latham Park.

Joe Dudek belted his fourth home run of the year in a five-run first inning, and Taylore Cherry picked up his first win of the season with 5-2/3 solid innings of work as the Tar Heels improved to 29-19.

Jordan then doubled home Ramirez and scored on a Korey Dunbar single. Two batters later, Dudek scorched a three-run homer off John Antonelli (0-1) to make it 5-0.

The Tar Heels added single runs in the second and third before Elon’s Casey Jones homered off Cherry (1-2) in the fourth for the first hit of the night for the Phoenix. Cherry pitched into the sixth to pick up his first win of 2014, allowing four runs on just four hits.

Elon (26-22) made a game of it with three runs in the sixth, but Carolina added two key insurance runs in the seventh on a Tom Zengel two-run double. The Phoenix rallied again in the bottom of the seventh against Trevor Kelley and Zach Rice, but Spencer Trayner entered the game and retired all six batters he faced, striking out five.

Hibbert awakens, leads Pacers past Wizards

INDIANAPOLIS — Roy Hibbert broke out of his playoff funk with a season-best 28 points and nine rebounds, leading the Indiana Pacers to an 86-82 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night that tied the Eastern Conference semifinals at 1-1.

It was a stark contrast to Hibbert’s abysmal, scoreless showing in Monday night’s loss — and most of this year’s playoffs.

But after hearing 48 hours of constant criticism and continual questions, Hibbert responded with the kind of game Indiana desperately needed. He made his first four shots, dominated the middle and produced big basket after big basket.
