Playoff-bound Hillside rocks East Chapel Hill

Nov. 01, 2013 @ 10:38 PM

Hillside entered Friday’s game at East Chapel Hill riding a 26-game PAC-6 Conference winning streak. With a dominating performance in the rain and mud the Hornets made it 27 straight.

Hillside beat an already beaten up Wildcat team 52-0, clinching a 4-A playoff spot and at least a share of first place in the PAC-6.

The Hornets can make it four consecutive outright PAC-6 titles in a row with a win next Friday against Person.

Donte Thomas-Williams had 214 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 18 carries to lead the offense, but the Hornet defense was the game’s real headliner.

“I thought we played an outstanding game defensively,” said Hillside head coach Antonio King. “We’re happy with another shutout in the conference.”

With so many injuries already, East Chapel Hill was left to try to run the ball—either with running backs Colby Owens and Jeremy Hubbard, or on wide receiver sweeps—against a bigger, faster Hillside front. Neither tactic worked, and when a shoulder injury ended Owens’ night, the Hornets offense took advantage.

Owens, a standout linebacker, was conspicuous by his absence defensively as the Hornets scored 28 third-quarter points to turn a 17-0 halftime lead into a rout.

A touchdown run from Thomas-Williams to start the third allowed backup running back Ra’Quon McCall to get some snaps and he responded with two touchdowns runs, including a 56-yarder, in the third.

“I think we got worn down in the second half,” said ECH head coach Jon Sherman.

The Wildcats, sporting an already depleted roster, had at least four more starters leave the game with injuries.

Sherman said that to help the team get healthy the Wildcats may not even practice in pads next week.

The Hornets were sloppy in the first half as they adjusted to the conditions, but managed to average more than 8 yards per carry while collecting 343 rushing yards what amounted to a postseason tuneup.

“We’re trying to get to where we’re playing championship-caliber football,” King said.
