DUKE WOMEN DESTROY S.C. VISITORS IN NCAA TOURNAMENT OPENER

Maybe it’s not entirely accurate to say Duke doesn’t have any point guards.

“I guess we’re all point guards,” coach Joanne P. McCallie said.

The Blue Devils had 21 assists — their most in two months — in an 87-45 rout of Winthrop on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

McCallie has had to tweak her lineup after season-ending knee injuries to Chelsea Gray and Alexis Jones left Duke with no true point guards.

In this game, everyone got into the act: Six Blue Devils had multiple assists, led by Haley Peters with six and center Elizabeth Williams with four.

“We’ve gone from no point guards,” McCallie said, “to all point guards.”

Tricia Liston scored 20 points and freshman Oderah Chidom added a season-high 17 points for the second-seeded Blue Devils (28-6).

PLAYOFF JOCKEYING: Hillside, Northern clash Friday

With an unscheduled bye week in hand, Northern should be rested and ready, but whether that’s enough tonight is another question.

Northern (2-6, 2-0 PAC-6 4-A) hosts preseason PAC-6 favorite Hillside (4-4, 2-0 PAC-6) at Durham County Memorial Stadium with the winner grabbing sole possession of first place in the PAC-6 and almost assuredly one of the league’s three post-season playoff berths.

The loser is also likely to grab a playoff berth, but also a road trip in the opening round of the playoffs because the league has an overall record of 10-48 which doesn’t bode well for a good post-season seeding for any team beyond the champ.

The Knights got a surprise night off last week when injury-decimated East Chapel Hill (0-8, 0-2 PAC-6) elected to forfeit its scheduled home game against Northern.

East will return to action tonight, athletic director Ray Hartsfield confirmed this week, and will host Roxboro Person (1-7, 0-2 PAC-6).

Also tonight, Jordan (1-7, 1-1 PAC-6) travels to Riverside (2-6, 1-1 PAC-6) in what could well be a battle for the league’s third and final playoff slot for underdog Jordan, at least.
