DUKE WOMEN DESTROY S.C. VISITORS IN NCAA TOURNAMENT OPENER

Maybe it’s not entirely accurate to say Duke doesn’t have any point guards.

“I guess we’re all point guards,” coach Joanne P. McCallie said.

The Blue Devils had 21 assists — their most in two months — in an 87-45 rout of Winthrop on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

McCallie has had to tweak her lineup after season-ending knee injuries to Chelsea Gray and Alexis Jones left Duke with no true point guards.

In this game, everyone got into the act: Six Blue Devils had multiple assists, led by Haley Peters with six and center Elizabeth Williams with four.

“We’ve gone from no point guards,” McCallie said, “to all point guards.”

Tricia Liston scored 20 points and freshman Oderah Chidom added a season-high 17 points for the second-seeded Blue Devils (28-6).

GOOD-KNIGHT

4-A BOYS: NO. 2 NORTHERN LOSES LATE LEAD IN 64-63 ELIMINATION LOSS TO NO. 7 APEX

Apex forward Majid Raji knocked down a short baseline jumper at the buzzer to bump Northern from the 4-A playoffs on Friday.

“I knew it was money,” Raji said.

The Cougars won 64-63.

Northern had the lead and possession with less than a minute left in the game.

There is no shot clock in high school basketball, so the Knights were positioned to milk the clock and wait for a foul from the Cougars.

But Northern’s players apparently heard no instructions from their bench to hold the ball. The Knights tried to make a play but missed a shot.

Apex rebounded and called time with 36.2 seconds left.

Raji scored to put the Cougars ahead.

Northern senior Ricky Council II snatched the lead for his team. His bucket put the Knights ahead 63-62.

Then Raji felled the Knights with that dagger.

WARREN TO NBA

N.C. State sophomore T.J. Warren of Durham announced Tuesday that he will forego his final two seasons of college basketball eligibility and enter the NBA Draft.

The N.C. State sophomore from Durham announced Tuesday that he will forego his final two seasons of college basketball eligibility and enter the NBA Draft.

“I would like to thank my coaches and teammates at NC State for allowing me to compete for this great university,” Warren said in a statement released by N.C. State. “It’s been a fun ride the last few years. I’ve had some great experiences and now I feel I’m ready to play at the next level. Playing in the NBA has been a lifelong dream of mine and playing at N.C. State has prepared me well to achieve my dream.”

Warren played at Durham’s Riverside High School before playing his last two seasons of high school basketball at Raleigh’s Word of God Academy and Brewster Academy in New Hampshire.

After averaging 12.1 points per game as a freshman in 2012-13, Warren emerged as one of the nation’s most prolific scorers this season.

The 6-8 Warren led the ACC by scoring 24.9 points per game, which was the No.3 scoring average in Division I this season. He made an ACC-best 52.5 percent of his field-goal attempts, making him just the third player in ACC history to lead the conference in scoring and rebounding in the same season.

RING OF HONOR

SOUTHERN'S STATE 3-AA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS GET THEIR RINGS

Southern High School celebrated its first state football title in style Friday, presenting state championship rings to players, coaches, school officials and program associates.

On hand for the elaborate two-hour ceremony in the school theater were guest speakers who included departed state title coach Adrian Jones, school coaching legends Chip Gill and Pete Shankle, new coach Darius Robinson and several hundred fans, cheerleaders, marching band and dance team.

Not to mention the 41 players who made the day possible.

They were treated to a video montage tribute recalling the 3-AA state championship win at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem in December and performances by the dance team, cheerleaders and band.

Southern School of Energy and Sustainability — Southern’s official name — principal Kenneth Barnes drew a few laughs during his welcoming remarks when he made it clear the ring presentation evening couldn’t have come sooner. Barnes admitted that players and coaches have pestered him for months asking when the rings would arrive.

Robinson, Southern’s athletic director who moved up from defensive coordinator to the head coaching job when Jones left to become an aide at N.C. Central after the season, admitted he was among the impatient.
