DUKE WOMEN DESTROY S.C. VISITORS IN NCAA TOURNAMENT OPENER

Maybe it’s not entirely accurate to say Duke doesn’t have any point guards.

“I guess we’re all point guards,” coach Joanne P. McCallie said.

The Blue Devils had 21 assists — their most in two months — in an 87-45 rout of Winthrop on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

McCallie has had to tweak her lineup after season-ending knee injuries to Chelsea Gray and Alexis Jones left Duke with no true point guards.

In this game, everyone got into the act: Six Blue Devils had multiple assists, led by Haley Peters with six and center Elizabeth Williams with four.

“We’ve gone from no point guards,” McCallie said, “to all point guards.”

Tricia Liston scored 20 points and freshman Oderah Chidom added a season-high 17 points for the second-seeded Blue Devils (28-6).

CHAMPS REIGN

LAST-MINUTE TD LIFTS SOUTHERN OVER HILLSIDE 16-13 AT NCCU

Southern junior Jordan Brown scored the go-ahead touchdown in the final minute of last year’s 3-AA state championship game.

On Friday he scored another winning touchdown in the final minute, and the stakes may have been just as high.

Brown’s 8-yard touchdown catch with 25 seconds left gave Southern a 16-13 win over 4-A Hillside at N.C. Central University’s O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, breaking the Hornets’ four-year winning streak in the city’s biggest rivalry.

“Winning the state championship is huge,” Southern coach Darius Robinson said. “But unfortunately in order for you to get the respect in our state, in our city, in our region, we have to win a game like this. So it’s on the level of a state championship because that’s a great team over there.”

The Southern-Hillside rivalry always seems to come down to the final possession — the last seven meetings have been decided by a total of 31 points — and Friday’s meeting was no exception.

KICKING IT OFF

No. 5 NEW BERN VISITS NO. 8 HILLSIDE IN FOOTBALL OPENER FRIDAY

For a program that churns out top national college prospects like Dairy Queen fills soft-serve cones, back-to-back early playoff exits the past two seasons has Hillside High School angry and ready to do something about it.

The Hornets, who haven’t lost a PAC-6 4-A game since 2009 and haven’t lost to a current PAC-6 member since Jordan pulled off a 21-20 win on Sept. 22, 2006, hope to ride a dominant offensive line into state title contention this season.

The trip begins Friday, Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m. as the Hornets, ranked No. 8 among 4-A schools in the state by CarolinaPreps.com, hosts No. 5 New Bern.

The voyage won’t be an easy one, particularly in the early going.

Hillside coach Antonio King has scheduled a nightmarish non-conference slate that includes reigning state champions No. 2-ranked Southern (3-AA) and No. 7-ranked Greensboro Dudley (4-A) to complete the Hornets’ three-game opening stretch.

BULL CITY STAR

RIVERSIDE'S TJ WARREN IS LIKELY 1ST ROUND PICK IN THURSDAY'S NBA DRAFT

From the ACC blood running through his veins to pickup games with future NBA players across town when he played at Riverside High School, T.J. Warren seemed destined to make Durham basketball history.

He did so last season at N.C. State by winning ACC player of the year and he’s set to take it a step further at the NBA Draft tonight.

Warren joins 19 other top prospects as invited guests to the NBA Draft at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, where he’s projected to be a first-round pick.

If things go as expected, the 6-8 high-scoring forward will be the first Durham native since Hillside High School’s Rodney Rogers in 1993 to be a first-round pick in the NBA Draft.

“That means a lot,” Warren said. “Growing up in Durham in a tough environment, just to be able to do something positive playing the game I love is big for me and for the city as well.”

Warren followed his father, former N.C. State player Tony Warren, to play for the Wolfpack. He topped his father by being named ACC player of the year after averaging a league-leading 24.9 points per game last season and leading the Wolfpack to a third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth.

His bloodlines were only the beginning of his indoctrination to high-level basketball. When Warren played at Riverside early in his high school career, he would head to Duke for pick-up games with guys like Nolan Smith, Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler — all starters on Duke’s 2010 NCAA championship team.
