Freshman Lisa Maguire, Duke's No. 5 player, double-bogeyed the sixth sudden-death overtime hole to lose in 24 holes Tuesday, giving Baylor a 3-2 win and eliminating reigning NCAA champion Duke in the semifinals of the NCAA women's golf championship at Bradenton, Fla., Tuesday. Katie Kirk, the 2014 champion, battled the elements and held off fellow competitors to claim the title for the second consecutive year. Kirk shot a two-over 74 on Thursday, which left her with a total score of one-under 215, good enough for a two-stroke victory over runner-up Sarah Bae (one-over 217).

The Duke men’s golf team capped off the NCAA Lubbock Regional with a two-over 286 to finish third and advance to the NCAA Championship tournament with an eight-under 844 here Saturday. Freshman Adam Wood and sophomore Max Greyserman paced the Blue Devils Saturday with two-under 69s at the Rawls Course (par 71, 7,349 yards).
With only the top five regional team finishers advancing to the national championship tournament on May 29, the Tar Heels were eliminated and their season ended.

It’s been 70 years, but Gordon Perry remembers it like it was yesterday. The date was April 1, 1945, Easter Sunday, and there he was at Hope Valley Country Club watching one of his childhood heroes, golf icon Byron “Lord Byron” Nelson, accept a $1,000 war bond for winning the Durham Open. The tournament took place a little more than a month before V-E Day, the day the Allied Forces formally accepted Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender to end World War II in Europe.
