Pirates phenom Gerrit Cole shuts down Bulls

Jun. 05, 2013 @ 05:12 PM

Gerrit Cole live up to his billing as MLB.com’s No. 9 prospect in minor league baseball Wednesday, combining with Kris Johnson on a five-hit shutout and defeating the Durham Bulls 1-0.

Johnson (5-3, 2.91 ERA) gave up three hits, walked one and struck out three in seven innings. Johnson finished up with a two-inning, two-hit save.

Hard-luck Bulls starter J.D. Martin nearly matched the Indianapolis Indians pitching but cost himself in the fourth inning, his throwing error on a pickoff attempt leading to the only run in the game. It was unearned.

Martin hit Josh Harrison leading off the bottom of the fourth. With Matt Hague batting, Martin’s errant pickoff toss sent Harrison to third. Felix Pie’s one-out double scored Harrison.

The Bulls, the top hitting team in the International League, had some scoring chances, but not many.

Rich Thompson led off the first with a single and was sacrificed to second by Jason Bourgeois, but Cole got Vince Belnome on a swinging third strike and retired cleanup hitter Wil Myers on a pop up.

Thompson was one of only two Durham players to advance as far as second base.

Cole, the overall No. 1 pick in the 2011 MLB Draft by Pittsburgh, retired 20 of the 21 batters he faced after Thompson’s first-inning single. Craig Albernaz reached him for a one-out single in the third, but was stranded there.

With two down in the seventh and Indy up 1-0, Cole walked Shelly Duncan with two outs and Brandon Guyer followed with a single to right. The threat never developed, though, as Duncan was cut down trying to advance to third on the play, ending the inning.

The Bulls’ only other hits — both singles — came in the eighth from Cole Figueroa and the ninth from Vince Belnome, both with one out. Albernaz and Thompson struck out to strand Figueroa and Myers and Duncan were retired, stranding Belnome, the potential tying run, at first in the Bulls’ final at-bat.

NOTES — Jeff Beliveau, who was called up to the parent Tampa Bay Rays on Friday but almost immediately returned to the Bulls, struck out the only batter he faced — Felix Pie — for the final out of the eighth with Harrison on second. Martin had given up a one-out double to Harrison before getting Hague on a fly ball and turning the ball over to Beliveau. ... Speculation was rampant in Pittsburgh that Cole was on the verge of a call-up by the parent Pirates and it only picked up after his performance Wednesday. ... Durham fans might remember Cole for his stint as a member of Durham Bulls Athletic Park-based Team USA in 2010 while still pitching for UCLA. ... The Bulls announced after the completion of Tuesday’s 13-inning marathon Bulls win here that they’d picked up free-agent catcher Jesus Flores, a five-year Major League veteran. Flores played for the Washington Nationals from 2007 through 2012, batting .241 with 23 home runs and 127 RBI. He began this season with Albuquerque of the Pacific Coast Leage and was released by the Dodgers organization on May 23. ... Flores replaces injured pitcher Will Inman on the roster. Inman was put on the disabled list after leaving Monday’s game with an injury. ... Belnome has reached base 27 straight games and has at least one hit in each of his last 24 games, five straight since his 18-game streak was broken on May 29.
