Bull blast RailRiders for second straight night on road
For the second straight night the Bulls built a big early lead and cruised to a 9-4 win at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Durham leads the four-game series two games to none.
Durham broke through for a pair of runs in the third off RailRiders starter Graham Stoneburner (2-3). Juan Apodaca led off with a single and scored on a one-out double by Brandon Guyer. Wil Myers, who’s three-run homer Thursday night led the Bulls to a win in the series opener at SWB, brought Guyer home with a two-out double of his own.
In the top of the fourth, the Bulls tacked on four more runs and drove Stoneburner from the game.
Shelly Duncan drew a leadoff walk and Mike Fontenot and Tim Beckham followed with singles, Duncan scoring on Beckham’s base hit. Apodaca was hit by a Stoneburner pitch to load the bases and Jason Bourgeois drew a walk tht scored Fontenot. With the bases still loaded, Guyer drove in Beckham with a ground out.
Chase Whitley relieved Stoneburner at that point and got Vince Belnome on an RBI ground out before striking out Myers to quell the uprising.
But it was already 6-0 Bulls.
Meanwhile, Bulls starter and winner Alex Colome, who’s pitched well this season — 2.65 ERA — but hasn’t had much luck in posting a 3-5 mark prior to Friday, was holding SWB scoreless until the bottom of the fifth.
The RailRiders used a pair of singles, an error and a ground out to score two runs and cut the lead to 6-2 off Colome in the inning. Both the runs were unearned, and Colome didn’t return for the sixth, when he was replaced by Will Inman, who shut the door with two scoreless innings — including four strikeouts — before giving way to Jeff Beliveau in a scoreless eighth.
The Bulls padded the lead in the top of the seventh. Myers reached on an error and Fontenot walked and the pair pulled off a double steal, eventually scoring on a two-out single by Apodaca for an 8-2 lead.
Durham tacked on a ninth run in the top of the eighth off reliever Clay Rapada on back-to-back singles by Guyer and Belnome and a sacrifice fly by Myers.
SWB picked up a pair of afterthought runs off reliever Jim Paduch in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out triple by Zoilo Almonte.
NOTES -- Charlie Montoyo earned his 500th career win as manager of the Durham Bulls. In his seventh season with Tampa Bay’s Triple-A affiliate, Montoyo reached the milestone in his 908th game as Bulls manager, eight games faster than International League Hall of Fame skipper Bill Evers. Montoyo is 113 wins shy of Evers’ Bulls franchise record of 613 career managerial victories.
