Bulls bats demolish RailRiders early, often
The running of the Bulls began early and Durham put away the host Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and starter Brett Marshall 8-5 at PNC Field in the opener of a four-game road series here Thursday.
Bull Rich Thompson singled off Marshall (2-3) leading off the game and Marshall hit Brandon Guyer with a pitch to set the stage for No. 3 hitter Vince Belnome. His two-run triple to left gave the Bulls a lead they wouldn’t relinquish despite having to wait through a 38-minute weather delay.
Belnome appeared destined to be stranded at third, but a two-out, two-run home run to left off Marshall by Shelly Duncan, his first of the season, finally got him home and the Bulls led 4-0 with the RailRiders still looking for their first at-bat.
The demolition continued in earnest in the fourth — again off Marshall, who made his major league debut for the parent N.Y. Yankees last week. Cole Figueroa and Juan Apodaca opened the inning with back-to-back singles and Figueroa scored on a ground ball fielder’s choice by Thompson.
With two down, Belnome walked and Wil Myers reached Marshall and the fence for a three-run blast, his fifth of the season, giving Bulls starter and winner Mike Montgomery (1-0), who’d allowed just one hit through the first three innings, an 8-0 lead.
The RailRiders finally got to Montgomery for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth as Josh Bell and Thomas Neal hit back-to-back two-out RBI doubles and cut the lead to 8-2.
Kelvin Perez replaced Marshall in the fifth for the RailRiders and pitched three scoreless innings before being replaced by Josh Spence.
Meanwhile, Montgomery maintained the 8-2 lead and gave way to Steve Geltz after five innings. Geltz was victimized by another RailRiders double leading off that frame, wild pitched Ronnier Mustelier to third and saw him score on a sacrifice fly.
It was the only run Geltz would give up in 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Adam Liberatore with two gone in the eighth. Liberatore gave up a pair of meaningless runs in the bottom of the ninth on a triple and a pair of doubles.
NOTES — Duncan, Guyer, Figueroa and Apodaca each had a pair of hits in the 12-hit Bulls attack. ... Myers drove in three runs and Duncan and Belnome two apiece for Durham. ... Bell was the only Yankee to manage two hits.
