Mud Hens’ rally prevents sweep by Bulls

Aug. 02, 2013 @ 10:42 PM

Through five innings of Friday night’s rain-plagued game at Fifth Third Park, the Durham Bulls and Toledo Mud Hens were tightly matched with a pair of runs and six hits each.

But that’s where the similarity ended, as the Mud Hens pounded Bulls starter Jake Odorizzi (8-5) in the sixth inning on the way to an 8-2 victory to prevent a sweep of the four-game series.
Bryan Holaday’s three-run double after Odorizzi issued a pair of walks to load the bases with one out in the sixth was the biggest blow of the night. Cory Wade came on in relief, and a sacrifice bunt drove in Holaday for a 6-2 lead.
The Mud Hens added two more runs in the eighth off Frank De Los Santos, who gave up two-out singles to Gustavo Nunez and Danny Worth before Jordan Lennerton walked to load the bases. Mike Cervenak reached first on an error by shortstop Tim Beckham, allowing Nunez and Worth to score.
Beckham and Kevin Kiermaier had a pair of hits each for Durham, which finished with seven.
The Bulls took the lead in the second inning, as Leslie Anderson, Shelley Duncan and Mike Fontenot singled to load the bases. Chris Gimenez grounded into a double play that allowed Anderson to score, then Kiermaier singled to drive in Duncan for a 2-0 lead.
But the Mud Hens wasted little time evening the score, as Danny Dorn led off the bottom of the inning with his 22nd home run to end the Bulls’ streak of 28 consecutive innings without giving up a homer. Ben Guez followed with a double to left, took third on a wild pitch by Odorizzi and scored on a groundout by Holaday.
