Anderson's double powers Bulls past Mud Hens
Leslie Anderson ripped a bases-loaded double in the eighth inning break a tie and lead the Durham Bulls to a 6-3 victory over the Toledo Mud Hens on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field.
Anderson had three hits for the Bulls (71-41), who lead professional baseball in wins and now are a season-best 30 games over .500 atop the International League South Division standings.
Evan Frey added a pair of doubles for Durham, while Vince Belnome had two singles.
Bulls reliever C.J. Riefenhauser (1-0) benefitted from Anderson’s go-ahead hit, picking up the victory with one inning of work. Josh Lueke pitched the final two innings for his 14th save, throwing 36 pitches with only four out of the strike zone.
Durham starter Matt Buschmann gave up eight hits while striking out eight, but he struggled in the first and fifth innings.
Leadoff hitter Kevin Russo doubled in the first and scored on a single by Jordan Lennerton, the first of his four hits in the game.
The Bulls took the lead in the second, as Belnome and Anderson opened with singles before Belnome tied the score on a groundout by Mike Fontenot. Frey’s first double drove in Anderson for 2-1 lead.
Durham added a run in the fifth when Jesus Flores doubled, went to third on a single by Kevin Kiermaier and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cole Figueroa.
But Lennerton singled to start a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning that cost Buschmann the decision. Mike Cervenak lined a double to right to drive in Lennerton, and Danny Dorn’s RBI double plated Cervenak to knot the score.
In the eighth, Figueroa and Tim Beckham singled with one out, and Belnome drew a walk to load the bases. After Toledo’s Jose Ortega came on to pitch in relief of Darin Downs, Anderson doubled to center to drive in two runs. Jason Bourgeois lofted a sacrifice fly to drive in Belnome to close the scoring.
Lueke struck out four of the eight batters he faced, giving up a single by Danny Worth in the eighth and a double by Lennerton in the ninth.
