Four-run sixth inning propels Norfolk past Romero, Bulls

Apr. 20, 2014 @ 10:14 PM

Norfolk broke a sixth-inning tie with four runs off Durham starter Enny Romero and defeated the Bulls 6-3 in International League baseball Sunday at Harbor Park.

The Bulls (13-5) entered the game having won 10 of its last 11 games. Romero, a highly touted left-hander in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, held the Tides to three hits and  one run over the first five innings.

Romero was matched by Kevin Gausman, whose fastball ranged between 94-97 mph and shut down the Bulls on four hits over five innings.

The Tides took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, turning two singles and a stolen base into a run.

Jerry Sands tied the game for Durham in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run off relief pitcher Chris Jones. Sands has five home runs for the Bulls this season.

But Norfolk wasted little time in regaining the lead, this time for good.

With one out, Jemile Weeks tripled on a line drive to centerfield. Romero struck out Henry Urruita to put himself in position to escape the inning unscathed, but Caleb Joseph lined a single to left field giving the Tides a 2-1 lead.

Chris Marrero followed with a single, sending Joseph to third base. A passed ball by Durham catcher Roman Ali Solis allowed Joseph to score for 3-1 Tides lead.

David Adams, who was at the plate when the passed ball occurred, slammed a two-run home run to right field giving Norfolk a 5-1 lead.

That was it for Romero as Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo replaced him with Juan Sandoval, who retired Ivan DeJesus on a ground ball to end the inning.

Norfolk extended its lead to 6-1 in the seventh inning when Alexi Casilla hit a solo home run off Sandoval.

Cole Figueroa answered with a solo shot for Durham in the eighth inning, slicing the Bulls’ deficit to 6-2.

Durham rallied in the ninth inning, scoring a run with two singles, a wild pitch and a Tides error. Trailing 6-3, the Bulls had two runners on with no outs.

But Norfolk closer Preston Guilmet shut the door. He got Robby Price on a force out before Ray Olmedo bounced into a game-ending, 3-6-3 double play.

The loss was Durham's first on the road this season after winning their opening seven games, and shrunk the Bulls' lead in the IL South Division to two games over Gwinnett, which beat Charlotte on Sunday.

The six-game set with Norfolk ends on Monday at 12:05 p.m. with Mike Montgomery (2-0, 4.38) starting against Eddie Gamboa (0-1, 4.00).
