Bulls sweep doubleheader from Tides, but lose top prospect
There was plenty for the Durham Bulls to celebrate Saturday night, including the two-out home run by Vince Belnome that gave them a doubleheader sweep of the Norfolk Tides at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
But an injury to shortstop Hak-Ju Lee in the opener cut into the postgame jubilation after the 10-4 and 5-3 wins.
Cruising with a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener, the mood changed when Lee injured his left knee on a collision while covering second base.
“Right now, we know he’s got a couple of torn ligaments, and he’s going to Tampa to be further evaluated,” Bulls coach Dave Myers said.
In the fourth, Norfolk’s Russ Canzler drew a one-out walk, Danny Valencia dropped a single in front of Brandon Guyer in right and Travis Ishikawa walked to load the bases.
When L.J. Hoes tapped a grounder to Durham’s Tim Beckham, the second baseman attempted to flip the ball backward to Lee covering the base. But Ishikawa collided with Lee, head to knee, ending the day for both while allowing two runs to score to trim the margin to 5-2.
“The guy’s got a broken nose, so he went face-first into his knee by all accounts,” Myers said of Ishikawa, who did not play in the second game. “With where the ball carried, we probably should have taken the out at first with a five-run lead.
“(Beckham) tried to make an aggressive play and get the force. It’s just bad luck.”
Chris Archer (3-0) pitched five innings to get the win in the opener, giving up a pair of earned runs when he left with the Bulls leading 10-3. Archer gave up seven hits and had a season-low four strikeouts on 96 pitches.
The Bulls got on the board first, as Jason Bourgeois led off with an infield single and went to third when Canzler dropped a hooking line drive to left by Lee for a two-base error. Bourgeois scored on a grounder by Brandon Guyer, and Lee crossed the plate when Leslie Anderson tapped out to second base.
In the second inning, Mike Fontenot slapped a one-out single and scored on a triple to right-center by Beckham. A groundout by Rich Thompson allowed Beckham to score uncontested for 4-0 Durham lead.
Archer helped himself with defensive plays, as well. In the first, he made a lunging stop on a ball topped by Danny Valencia and tossed to first base for the final out. He sprinted to his left to grab a grounder by Jason Pridie and made the putout unassisted to end the third inning.
The Tides threatened to take the lead in the top of the fifth, but the Bulls gave up one run before recording the final two outs with the bases loaded.
Durham pulled away in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Leslie Anderson and a two-RBI double by Fontenot for a 10-3 lead.
In the second game, Kirby Yates (2-1) came on to pitch in the sixth and notched three of the 13 strikeouts by the Bulls staff. Josh Lueke pitched the seventh to record his fourth save.
Bourgeois again singled to open Game 2, stole second, went to third on a hit by Fontenot and scored when Wil Myers grounded into a double play.
Myers, who left Thursday’s win over Charlotte after fouling a ball off his foot, drove in a pair of runs in the nightcap including his first homer of the season to lead off the fourth inning. Durham added a run on back-to-back doubles by Vince Belnome and Beckham for a 3-0 lead.
Bulls starter Alex Torres took a no-hitter into the fifth inning but walked the first three Norfolk batters, and the Tides scored on a groundout by Luis Exposito. Jonathan Schoop followed with a sharp single to right to drive in two more and tie the score 3-3.
Torres settled down to get Trayvon Robinson on a come-backer, then struck out Niuman Romero to end the inning.
“The first four innings, I was in a groove,” said Torres, who left the game with the score tied. “That inning, when I went out, I was thinking about a (complete game). That might have affected me a little. I started to do more than I should have.”
Belnome’s game-winning homer was his first home run of the season, capping a night during which he went 3-for-6 at the plate.
