Bulls fall behind early, can't bring tying run home late in loss

Durham Bulls starter Matt Andriese eventually started dominating Buffalo, retiring 19 of the final 20 hitters he faced Friday night.

But by then it was too late.

The Bisons' four-run first inning proved to be enough against a struggling Durham offense as the Bulls fell 4-3 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

“(Andriese) was good and bad,” Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo said. “He was bad because we don’t score that many runs. When you’re down four, we average 3.4 a game (in August). That was the bad. He battled the rest of the way to keep us in the game and save the bullpen, so that was very good.”

Andriese (11-7) gave up a bases-loaded walk to Brad Glenn before Andy LaRoche cleared the bags with a double. But after leaving everything up in the zone, Andriese began locating his pitches better and retired the next 15 Buffalo hitters. The righty needed just 14 pitches to get through the third and fourth innings.

“He makes an adjustment — that’s the sign of a good pitcher,” Montoyo said.

Andriese allowed just one more baserunner after the first inning — a two-out single in the sixth by Cole Gillespie — before leaving after the seventh.

Durham (62-57) had scored exactly one run in five of its last eight games, making a comeback unlikely, but the Bulls had a good shot in the fourth. After Mikie Mahtook and Jeremy Moore led off with singles against Sean Nolin (4-4), Wilson Betemit hit an RBI double off the outfield wall and Ali Solis hit a sacrifice fly. Ray Olmedo followed with an RBI single to make it 4-3 and the Bulls loaded the bases with one out, but Robby Price grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Bulls would have the tying run in scoring position in four of the last six innings but failed to get it across.

In the ninth, Bisons closer Bobby Korecky (20 saves) issued two walks, but Price was unsuccessful on a bunt attempt, Mahtook struck out and Moore flew out as the Bisons (63-56) won for the 15th time in 19 games.

Durham’s offense was to get a boost Saturday from Wil Myers, the 2013 AL Rookie of the Year, who is starting a major league rehab assignment as the Bulls’ designated hitter as he comes back from a broken wrist.

“I’m not counting on Wil — he hasn’t played in two months — but who knows?” Montoyo said. “He might show up and give us a spark, so we’ll see.”
