Odorizzi can’t find rhythm as Bulls fall to Braves

Jul. 23, 2013 @ 11:22 PM

Jake Odorizzi’s post-All Star break struggles continued Tuesday.

The Durham righty allowed four runs in four-plus innings as Gwinnett defeated the Bulls 4-1 at Coolray Field.

Odorizzi was 7-2 with a 3.20 ERA heading into the break, but allowed four runs on seven hits and five walks in 3 1/3 innings last Thursday. After that start, he said the seven days off between outings through him off rhythm. Odorizzi needed 99 pitches to get through four innings Tuesday while giving up seven hits.

Joe Leonard doubled in the tie-breaking runs in the fourth to lead Gwinnett to its second win in 10 games against the Bulls. Leonard drove a 3-2 pitch from Odorizzi (7-4) against the wall with one out to give the Braves their second lead of the game, scoring Stefan Gartrell and Alden Carrithers and making the score 3-1.

Yohan Flande (5-6), who was facing the Bulls (65-39) for the 16th time in his career, worked six innings, permitting one run on four hits to notch the victory. Cory Rasmus entered in the eighth facing the tying run at the plate, but fanned Brandon Guyer and Vince Belnome to leave Jason Bourgeois and Cole Figueroa in scoring position.

The Braves (45-59) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Odorizzi on a two-out double to left by Ernesto Mejia. The Bulls’ starter needed 34 pitches to exit the first, stranding two.

Adam Liberatore threw two scoreless innings in long relief for Durham, with Frank DeLosSantos and Steve Geltz combining for the final two frames.

Figueroa had a pair of singles for the Bulls, with Roberts driving in Durham’s lone run. The Bulls entered the night with the best record in all of professional baseball, but mustered just six hits in the defeat.

The series now shifts to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park for two more games, today and tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Mike Montgomery (4-4, 4.52) starts tonight for the Bulls against Gwinnett’s Brandon Beachy (1-3, 3.38). Durham’s Merrill Kelly (4-1, 2.57) is scheduled to pitch Thursday’s game against Cody Martin (2-1, 2.94).
