Martin sharp as Durham rolls past Gwinnett

The Durham Bulls continued their domination of the Gwinnett on Monday night, blanking the Braves 7-0 at Coolray Field behind a combined shutout by International League all-star J.D. Martin and reliever Jeff Beliveau.

International League South Division-leading Durham (65-38) beat Gwinnett for the eighth time in nine games this season.

Martin (12-4) was brilliant, hurling a season-high eight innings of shutout baseball. He struck out six and retired 18 straight hitters from the second inning through the eighth inning. Beliveau worked a perfect ninth inning.

Luis Nunez broke up Martin's retired batters streak, smacking a double down the left field line in the eighth. But was thrown out trying to advance to third base. He would have been one of just two Braves to reach scoring position on the night.

The Bulls got off to a strong start as Brandon Guyer hit a leadoff homer off right-hander Joe Bisenius in the top of the first inning, making it 1-0 Durham.

In the top of the third inning, the Bulls used consecutive singles by Evan Frey, Guyer and Cole Figueroa to push across their second run of the game. After Guyer's single put runners on the corners, Figueroa delivered an RBI single, extending the lead to 2-0.

Guyer continued his dominance against Bisenius, hitting a leadoff triple in the fifth and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Figueroa, making it 3-0.

The Bulls put the game away in the ninth inning, scoring four runs on four hits. With the bases loaded, Frey delivered a two-run single, Figueroa hit an RBI single and Vince Belnome added a walk to plate another run.

Bisenius (L, 3-3) suffered the loss despite his second quality start for Gwinnett. He scattered five hits, allowed three runs, walked two and struck out three over six innings.

The Gwinnett managed only four hits, with Nunez picking up the Braves’ lone extra base hit, going 1-for-3 with a double.

Guyer led the Bulls, going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. He was a double away from the cycle as he collected a homer in the first, a single in the third and a triple in the fifth. Figueroa went 2-or-4 with three RBIs and Frey added two RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting.

The Bulls and Braves return to action tonight at 6:05 p.m. in the finale of the quick two-game series. Left-hander Yohan Flande (4-6, 5.29) will start for the Braves, while the Bulls will counter with right-hander Jake Odorizzi (7-3, 3.49).
