HR SINKS BULLS
The Durham Bulls lost their second straight game to the Gwinnett Braves Saturday at the DBAP, 4-1, falling below .500 (1-2) for the first time since 2012.
After Gwinnett jumped out to first inning leads in each of the season’s first two games, Saturday’s contest was a pitchers’ duel. In his first start as a Bull, starter Matt Andriese opened the game with three no-hit innings.
Gwinnett starter Daniel Rodriguez topped Andriese by posting three perfect opening innings.
Gwinnett finally got to Andriese in the fourth, getting back-to-back singles by Tommy La Stella and Phil Gosselin. With a 2-1 count on Braves’ first baseman Mark Hamilton, Andriese threw a pitch he regretted.
“He pitched very well,” Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo said, “but you make one mistake, and, of course, you pay for it.”
Andriese threw a slider in the wrong location, and Hamilton drove a line drive into the stands in right field for a three-run homer.
Gwinnett has six home runs in three games against Durham, and four have come with runners on base.
“The last couple days, we’ve been hit by the two- and three-run homers,” Montoyo said.
Hamilton’s blast made a losing pitcher out of Andriese, who struck out five in five innings and allowed just one other hit after the home run.
“I felt pretty good,” Andriese said. “I got into the rhythm early on. I had a lot of good pitches, but it probably came down to one pitch.”
“The two hits prior to that were pretty good pitches,” he added. “They just found a hole. The home run was a mistake. I tried to get it in on him, but it ran back over the middle of the plate.”
Rodriguez struck out nine in five two-hit innings to earn the win. Juan Jaime pitched the ninth for his first save.
The Braves and Bulls close out the four-game series at 1:05 p.m. today at the DBAP. Mike Montgomery starts for the Bulls against Mitch Atkins.
NOTES – The Bulls received their 2013 Governors’ Cup championship rings in a ceremony before the game. Fourteen current Bulls were on last year’s squad. ... Montoyo took out his ring in his office after the game. “Let me put this on before I talk to you,” he joked with the media. ... Most of the players said that their rings would probably end up with their parents. Infielder Cole Figueroa’s won a Midwestern League title in 2009 with Class A Fort Wayne, in the Padres organization. That ring is at his mother’s house, in storage. “I’ll probably put it in safekeeping with the other one. It’s not really something you can wear around town.” ... “This is my first one at any level,” All Star reliever Kirby Yates said. “I’m sure it’ll end up with my dad, somehow.”
