Durham catcher Chris Gimenez ripped three hits and scored a pair of runs, while three Bulls pitchers combined for a 5-0 shutout of the Syracuse Chiefs in International League action Monday night.
Bulls starter Jake Odorizzi (2-0) pitched five innings, giving up four of the Chiefs five hits while recording six strikeouts without giving up a walk.
Frank De Los Santos pitched two hitless innings for Durham, and Steve Geltz pitched the final pair of innings with one hit and two strikeouts.
Rich Thompson and Leslie Anderson added a pair of hits each for Durham (17-8).
The Bulls got the only run they would need in the first inning, as Thompson legged out a leadoff triple and scored on a grounder by Jason Bourgeois.
They added an insurance run in the second, as Gimenez opened the inning with a double, went to third on a fly ball by Vince Belnome and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Guyer for a 2-0 lead.
Durham plated its final three runs in the sixth, as Anderson led off with his second double of the night and went to third on a single by Gimenez. Belnome walked to load the bases, and Cole Figueroa doubled to drive in a pair of runs.
After a two-out pitching change, Thompson reached first on a fielding error by shortstop Zach Walters as Belnome scored the final run.
The Bulls hold a 2-1 lead in the series, which concludes today with a noon contest.
NOTES — Belnome was named the IL batter of the week on Monday after hitting .500 including a grand slam in Friday’s victory over Toledo. He also was part of the first triple play at Durham Bulls Athletic Park since 2005, turning the play at second base for the relay to first. He had three homers, 11 RBIs and a 1.050 slugging percentage during the week.
