Myers' homers power Bulls to victory over Bats
Wil Myers ripped a pair of home runs, including the decisive two-run blast in the fifth inning, to lift the Durham Bulls to a 6-3 win over the Louisville Bats on Saturday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
Bulls starter Matt Buschmann (1-0) pitched 5.1 innings, scattering six hits while yielding three runs (two earned) with two walks and three strikeouts. Steve Geltz pitched 2.2 innings of relief, giving up one hit while striking out three, and Josh Lueke earned his eighth save with one inning of one-hit pitching and a pair of strikeouts.
Tim Beckham, Brandon Guyer and Vince Belnome had a pair of hits each for the Bulls.
The Bulls led all the way, as Belnome reached on a fielder's choice for the second out of the first inning, Myers singled to move him to third and a wild pitch by Bats starter Armando Galarraga allowed Durham to take a 1-0 lead.
Myers' one-out home run in the third made the margin 2-0, then his 12th home run of the season came with two out and Guyer on base after single in the fifth for a 4-0 spread.
Louisville cut into the margin in the sixth, as former Durham catcher Nevin Ashley led off with a walk and Billy Hamilton followed with a single. Ashley went to third on a fly out, and Hamilton stole second before Neftali Soto reached on an error by Beckham at shortstop to allow Ashley to score.
Felix Perez doubled in Hamilton and Soto, ending the night for Buschmann. But Geltz got the final two outs to leave the Bulls with a 4-3 advantage.
Jason Bourgeois opened the seventh with a single, and Guyer beat out a bunt to put runners on first and second. Belnome singled in Bourgeois, and Leslie Anderson doubled in Guyer to close the scoring.
