Bulls fade after fast start

Jun. 28, 2014 @ 10:14 PM

The Durham Bulls allowed six unanswered runs after scoring four times in the first inning and lost 6-4 to Pawtucket Saturday night at McCoy Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Steven Wright (3-1) allowed four runs on four hits in the first, then settled in and allowed no runs and three total baserunners over his next six innings. The knuckleballer struck out seven and walked two. Pawtucket (42-41) has won four in a row for only the second time this season and the first since April 13-17.

Jayson Nix homered for Durham to open the scoring in the first, and Curt Casali later capped the four-run rally against Wright with a two-run double.

Durham would collect only four more hits after the first inning. Justin Christian went 3-for-4 to pace the Bulls' eight-hit attack.

Trailing 4-0 after the top of the first, the PawSox offense started the comeback quickly against Bulls starter Merrill Kelly (6-2) by scoring single runs in each of the first three innings. Carlos Rivero's two-out RBI single in the first gave Pawtucket its first run, then Christian Vazquez's solo homer in the second (3) made the score 4-2.

Ryan Roberts slugged a two-out RBI single off the left-centerfield fence in the third to score Carp and bring Pawtucket within 4-3. Carp led off the frame with a sharp single into right field.

Kelly allowed hits to the first three batters he faced in the fourth, with a Vazquez double followed by Alex Hassan's single to put runners on the corners. Justin Henry then knocked Kelly from the game with a two-run single to center that put the PawSox in front 5-4.

Neither squad scored another run until the eighth, when Hassan delivered a two-out RBI single against reliever Adam Liberatore. Rich Hill, Pawtucket's third pitcher of the night, recorded the final four outs.

Game two of the series is slated for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, as Pawtucket goes for a season-high fifth consecutive win. Lefty Chris Hernandez (3-6, 3.39) will get the ball for the PawSox, while southpaw Enny Romero (3-8, 5.04) is expected to start for the Bulls.
