Martin gets his 15th win as Bulls sweep Knights
J.D. Martin became the first 15-game winner for the Durham Bulls in 45 years as the Bulls swept a doubleheader from the Charlotte Knights on Sunday.
Martin recorded his International League-leading 15th win in the first game as the Bulls used a five-run sixth inning to win 8-5. The Bulls had three doubles in the decisive frame, including a two-run double off the bat of Chris Gimenez. Kevin Kiermaier and Tim Beckham also added RBI doubles in the inning.
Martin (15-4), an IL All-Star, won his sixth straight decision by allowing three runs over six innings, walking one and striking out five. Shelley Duncan had a two-out, two-run single in the third inning for Durham.
The Bulls carried that momentum into game two with a three-run first inning against Stephen McCray (0-1), who was making his first Triple-A start, and went on to win 5-1.
Kevin Kiermaier walked to lead off and scored on a three-base throwing error by third baseman Brent Morel, who misplayed a sacrifice bunt by Beckham. Beckham would score on an RBI single by Leslie Anderson.
Evan Frey had two hits and two RBIs to lead the offense in the second game, while reliever Josh Lueke (3-1) lowered his ERA to 0.68 by recording the final five outs, including three by strikeout.
With the two wins, the Bulls improved their IL-best record to 80-49.
The two teams will conclude their series today at 7:15 p.m. Jake Odorizzi (8-5, 3.70), who has only pitched eight innings in his last two starts combined and hasn’t won since July 28, will face Charlotte’s Erik Johnson (2-1, 1.93).
