Bulls roll in 12-inning comebacker behind Belnome, Roberts
Ryan Roberts’ one-out double in the top of the 12th inning plated Brandon Guyer with the winning run as the Durham Bulls won the finale of a two-game series from the Charlotte Knights 4-3.
Vince Belnome drove in the first three Bulls runs to put Durham in position to win it.
The Bulls swept the series and return to Durham Bulls Athletic Park tonight to host the Knights in the opener of another two-game series, this one at 7:05 p.m.
Nothing came easily for the Bulls Tuesday as they had to rally twice, coming back from one- and two-run deficits.
Charlotte opened the scoring in the first on a double by Carlos Sanchez and a two-out RBI single by Mike McDade. The Bulls answered with a tying run in the top of the third as Guyer walked and moved to second on a single by Tim Beckham. Ryan Roberts grounded into a double play, but Belnome singled Guyer home.
The Knights retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Durham starter J.D. Martin hit McDade leading off and Hector Gimenez followed with an RBI triple. Tyler Greene’s double scored Gimenez for a 3-1 lead.
The Bulls, who left seven on base in seven innings against Knights starter Charles Leesman, got a reprieve when Leesman left and reliever Daniel Webb opened the eighth.
Roberts led off against Webb with a single and came home soon after on Belnome’s game-tying two-run homer.
Martin (10-4) was off the hook for a potential loss as Kirby Yates came on for him to begin the bottom of the eighth of the 3-3 game.
With the exception of hitting McDade and Dewayne Wise, Martin displayed outstanding control. He struck out six and walked none, helping him survive an eight-hit Knights onslaught over seven innings that included three doubles and Gimenez’s triple.
Both pitching staffs settled down after Bulls rally.
Yates pitched two scoreless innings and Webb gave up only one hit in two innings after his early struggles as the game went to extra innings.
Donnie Veal pitched a scoreless 10th and 11th for Charlotte and Frank De Los Santos in relief of Yates in the bottom of the 10th and eventual winner Jeff Beliveau in the 11th for De Los Santos also pitched shutout ball.
After Roberts’ double off hard-luck loser Veal gave the Bulls the lead in the 12th, manager Charlie Montoyo called on former big leaguer Cory Wade to close it out against the top farm club of the Chicago White Sox.
Wade did just that, retiring the side in order to pick up the save.
Durham Bulls (58-35) 4, Charlotte Knights (41-52) 3
