Figueroa, Belnome send Durham past Charlotte

Jul. 08, 2013 @ 11:33 PM

Cole Figueroa and Vince Belnome had three hits each leading the Durham Bulls to an 8-2 win over the Charlotte Knights in International League baseball Monday night.

Figueroa and Belnome paced an 11-hit attack for the IL South Division-leading Bulls, who jumped to a 4-0 lead and cruised over the Knights.

Belnome doubled and score on a Chris Gimenez sacrifice fly to open the scoring in the fourth inning.

Durham extended its lead with a three-run fifth inning rally that knocked Charlotte starting pitcher Tony Pena from the game.

Figueroa and Ryan Roberts started the inning with singles off Pena before Belnome’s single loaded the bases with no outs. Jake Petricka, who replaced Pena, uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Figueroa to score for a 2-0 Durham lead.

After Leslie Anderson was retired on a pop-up, Shelley Duncan’s sacrifice fly drove in Roberts. Belnome scored on Mike Fontenot’s infield single and the Bulls had a 4-0 lead.

That was more than enough runs for the Bulls pitching staff. Matt Buschmann started and pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five Knights.

Relievers Adam Liberatore and C.J. Riefenhauser pitched two innings each, combining to hold Charlotte to two hits while recording five strikeouts.

Just to be sure, the Bulls kept tacking on runs with two-run rallies in the sixth and seventh innings.

Against Charlotte’s Santos Rodriguez, Figueroa singled with one out before Roberts and Belnome walked to load the bases.

After Anderson was called out on strikes, Duncan ripped a two-run double for a 6-1 Bulls lead.

In the seventh inning, facing Charlotte’s Jeff Gray, Figueroa doubled in Evan Frey with one out. Belhome drove in Figueroa with a two-out single for an 8-1 Durham lead.

The Bulls and Knights complete their two-game series at Knights Stadium tonight at 7:15 p.m. The teams travel to Durham to play two more games Wednesday and Thursday nights at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
