Bulls close trip with win

May. 12, 2014 @ 10:11 PM

The Durham Bulls completed a tough road trip with a sterling pitching performance on Monday.

Five different Bulls pitchers held Scranton/Wilkes-Barre down as Durham posted a 2-1 win Monday at PNC Field.

The Bulls (22-17), having lost six of eight games on the road swing, return home to begin an eight-game homestand at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park tonight. The Bulls face Charlotte at 7:05 p.m.

On Monday, scheduled starter Enny Romero was scratched from his start prior to the game, leaving Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo to piece things together with a bullpen game. That group did the job, limiting Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to just one run on seven hits.

The Bulls scored the game's first run in the fourth inning when Wilson Betemit led off with his eighth homer of the season over the right field wall. In the fifth Durham pushed its lead to 2-0, as Cole Figueroa doubled and scored on Betemit's RBI single to right field.

The RailRiders (19-17) sliced Durham's lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning as an RBI single by Scott Sizemore left the Bulls up 2-1.

In the sixth inning, the RailRiders appeared poised to take the lead, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. But Durham's Jake Thompson locked in to strike out the side and protect the Bulls' slim lead.

Thompson (1-0) earned his first career Triple-A victory, tossing two innings and surrendering two hits while striking out three, and Kirby Yates saved his 10th game in as many chances, retiring all four hitters he faced. Brian Gordon (2-3) took the loss for the RailRiders, allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings of work.

When the Bulls take the field at the DBAP tonight, left-hander Mike Montgomery (3-1, 4.54) will start for Durham against  right-hander Felipe Paulino (0-1, 14.40). Paulino is on a rehabilitation assignment from the Chicago White Sox.
