Long balls doom Archer, Bulls in home loss to Mud Hens
Chris Archer offered no sugarcoated answers Thursday night.
“It was pretty apparent,” the Durham Bulls right-handed pitcher said. “I got hit.”
Toledo tattooed three of its five home runs during Archer’s five innings of work as the Mud Hens topped Durham 9-7 in International League baseball before a crowd of 7,025 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Archer (3-1) entered the night having not allowed a home run in four previous starts this season. That changed when he allowed three over the second and third innings when the Mud Hens built a 5-0 lead.
“I got hit,” Archer said. “Some pitches were well located that got hit. Others were not. That’s the summary.”
While striking out six Toledo batters, Archer allowed seven hits and walked two.
The second and third innings were the roughest for the former Clayton High School star. After he retired the Mud Hens in order in the first inning, Jordan Lennerton led off the second with his first home run of the night.
One out later, Danny Dorn and Bryan Holaday singled before Argenis Diaz drove in Dorn with a double. No. 9 hitter Gustavo Nunez’s RBI single made it 3-0 Toledo.
Archer struck out the first two Toledo batters in the third inning. But John Lindsey and Dorn smacked back-to-back home runs for a 5-0 Mud Hens lead.
For a player who was the Tampa Bay Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Year last season while also seeing 29 1/3 innings of big-league work, Archer hasn’t been dominant so far this season.
He’s now allowed 26 hits in 20 innings over his last three starts, walking nine.
“Hopefully it’s just a little struggle right now and hopefully he will get it back,” Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo said. “It’s got nothing to do with him being here right now and (thinking) he should be in the big leagues because that’s not the guy he is. He’s a worker. We’re going to get him back.”
The Bulls did their part at the plate to not allow Toledo to cruise to an easy win.
Durham scored four runs in its third inning to cut the Mud Hens’ lead to one run.
Mike Fontenot doubled in two runs and Wil Myers followed with a long home run the opposite way to right-centerfield making it 5-4 Toledo.
The Mud Hens added an unearned run off Archer in the fifth inning due to a Tim Beckham error to lead 6-4. After Jim Paduch replaced Archer on the mound, Holday smacked a solo home run and a Chris Gimenez error at third base allowed another unearned run that put the Mud Hens up 8-4.
Durham made one last push with a three-run sixth-inning rally, which was highlighted by Vince Belnome’s two-run home run that just cleared the fence in right field. After a Beckham double, Jason Bourgeois’ RBI-single left Toledo with a one-run lead again at 8-7.
But Lennerton’s second home run of the night, another solo shot, put Toledo up 9-7 in the seventh inning. Durham failed to get a hit over the last three innings as Toledo’s bullpen protected the lead.
NOTES — Fontenot left the game after three innings due to hamstring tightness. Montoyo described the move as precautionary … The Bulls complete their nine-game homestand tonight at 7:05 against Toledo. Lefthander Alex Torres (1-0, 1-69) gets the start for Durham … Former UNC pitcher Luke Putkonen pitched two innings for the Mud Hens Thursday night. He allowed two hits and a run while striking out four. Detroit drafted Putkonen in the third round of the 2007 draft.
