Bulls lose lead late, fall at Syracuse

May. 06, 2014 @ 10:07 PM

Durham lost to Syracuse for the second time in as many nights Tuesday, falling 3-2 after relief pitcher Juan Sandoval (0-1) blew a save opportunity, failing to hold a 2-1 lead in the seventh.

The Bulls broke on top in the second on Wilson Betemit’s leadoff homer and the Chiefs — the top farm club of the Washington Nationals — came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth off Nathan Karns — the only run Karns would allow.

Brock Peterson singled, Jhonatan Solano doubled him to third and Karns walked the bases loaded. Destin Hood’s sacrifice fly plated Peterson with the tying run and Karns escaped further damage.

The Bulls got the lead back in the top of the fifth on Curt Casali’s one-out single, a walk to Hak-Ju Lee and an RBI single by Justin Christian.

Karns held the lead until giving way to Juan Sandoval to open the bottom of the seventh.

Sandoval immediately surrendered a single to Eric Komatsu and a walk to Emmanuel Burriss. The runners were sacrificed to second and third and Will Rhymes doubled both the runners home.

Sandoval walked Steven Souza Jr. but got Peterson and Solano on popups to keep Syracuse’s lead at a single run.

The Bulls went down 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth and Sandoval held Syracuse scoreless in the bottom of the inning. But any Bulls’ comeback hopes fizzled when Vince Belnome was stranded at first in the ninth after reaching on a one-out single.

Daniel Stange (1-1), who pitched 1-2/3 innings in relief of Chiefs’ starter Omar Poveda (six innings, two runs, both earned) and was the beneficiary of Sandoval’s largesse, got the win. Michael Gonzalez got the save, his first, with 1-1/3 innings in relief of Stange.

NOTES — Bulls’ righthander Brad Boxberger was recalled by the parent Tampa Bay Rays and Karns was optioned back to the Bulls from the Rays, who also moved righthander Jack Thompson up to the Bulls from Double-A Montgomery. ... The Bulls lost pitcher Steve Geltz on Monday. He was suspended 50 games for use of a banned substance. Also Tuesday, outfielder Jeremy Moore was activated from the Bulls’ disabled list and transferred to Montgomery. ... LHP Mike Montgomery (3-0, 3.19) gets the start for the Bulls today at noon against the Chiefs who had not named a starter as of late Tuesday night.
