Bulls keep it going against RailRiders
The Durham Bulls bid for a second straight no-hitter lasted all of one pitch.
But while Ramon Flores’ single to start the game ended any hopes of another historic game, the Bulls still continued their winning ways.
Merrill Kelly and three relievers combined to allow just four hits, and Jerry Sands hit his team-leading sixth home run as Durham beat Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 6-4 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Sunday.
With a no-decision, Kelly failed to become the first pitcher in professional baseball with five wins. But he allowed just four base runners in six innings in front of a crowd of 8,340 that included Tampa Bay Rays general manager Andrew Friedman.
“Good outing by Kelly,” Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo said. “He wasn’t as sharp as he usually is, but you look at the scoreboard and it’s three hits (allowed). He’s been very good, and it’s good timing to pitch like that in front of our GM. He’s one of those guys that needs to keep showing it — ‘OK, I’m here’ — and he’s doing that, and I’m happy for him.”
Kelly did give up a solo home run in the second inning to Russ Canzler — the International League MVP with the Bulls in 2011 — and a two-run shot to Zoilo Almonte in the third that gave the RailRiders (10-12) a 3-1 lead.
Durham (17-8) regained the lead with a three-run fifth inning and went ahead for good in the seventh when Wilson Betamit led off with a double off the scoreboard and scored on a sacrifice fly from Mike Fontenot.
Sands added a two-out RBI single in the eighth to put the Bulls up 6-4, and Yates pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to record his IL-leading eighth save in eight chances.
After finishing off an eight-game road trip with a season-high three straight losses, the Bulls have now started 2-0 in their current eight-game homestand, which started with the franchise’s third-ever Triple-A no-hitter on Saturday.
NOTES — Montoyo said that outfielder Kevin Kiermaier is day-to-day with a tight hamstring. … Durham is 15-0 when leading after six innings. ... The third game of the four-game series is tonight at 7:05 p.m. Nathan Karns (2-2, 8.02) is scheduled to start for the Bulls after giving up a career-high eight runs in two innings Wednesday in Charlotte. He will face Alfredo Aceves (0-0, 0.00 in nine innings pitched).
