Ex-Bull Frank De Los Santos pitches Charlotte to win

Apr. 24, 2014 @ 10:18 PM

Four Charlotte relievers combined on a four-hitter and shut down the Durham Bulls 4-3 at BB&T Ballpark here Thursday night.

Charlotte hit Bulls starter Matt Andriese (1-2, 3.81) hard to open the game, but wound up with only one run to show for it.

Gorkys Hernandez led off the bottom of the first with a double but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple on a relay from rightfielder Jerry Sands to second baseman Mike Fontenot to third baseman Ray Olmedo.

The play proved pivotal as Carlos Sanchez followed with a single and was doubled home by Andy Wilkins with one out. Andriese settled down to strike out Matt Davidson and Dan Black and strand Wilkins.

Wilson Betemit’s leadoff homer in the top of the second tied it at 1.

The Bulls, held to one run in three innings by Knights emergency starter Ryan Kussmaul, didn’t fare any better against a familiar face for the next three innings as former Bulls reliever Frank De Los Santos (1-0, 0.00) came on and allowed a hit and a walk while striking out four. De Los Santos pitched for the Bulls parts of each of the past two seasons.

Andriese was outstanding after his shaky start, allowing no more hits and two walks until running into trouble, much of it his own making, in the bottom of the seventh.

With the game still tied at 1, Andriese hit leadoff batter Jared Mitchell and Gorkys Hernandez sent him to third with a single. Carlos Sanchez followed with a bunt single back to Andriese, scoring Mitchell. The runners moved up to second and third on a throwing error by Andriese on the play.

Andriese wild-pitched Gorkys Hernandez home and Wilkins brought Sanchez home with a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 lead.

Donnie Veal, who relieved De Los Santos, pitched a perfect seventh, but was a victim of his own wildness in the top of the eighth. Veal walked the first three batters the faced in the eight — Fontenot, Justin Christian and Cole Figueroa — and gave way to David Purcey, Charlotte’s fourth pitcher of the night.

Purcey wild-pitched Fontenot home and then walked Betemit to reload the bases, still with one out. The Bulls cut the lead to 4-3 on a groundout by Jerry Sands and Purcey walked Vince Belnome to load the bases for a third time, still with just one out and the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

But Purcey got out of the jam by getting .333 hitter Mikie Mahtook on strikes and Olmedo on a grounder for the third out.

In the top of the ninth, Purcey gave up a leadoff single to catcher Eddie Rodriguez and backup Roman Ali Solis pinch ran. He went nowhere as Fontenot struck out and Christian’s pop foul was turned into an inning-ending double-play when Solis was thrown out at second.

Purcey picked up his second save of the season.

NOTES — The Bulls complete their eight-game road trip tonight (7:05 p.m., WDNC AM-620) at Charlotte with lefty Enny Romero (2-2, 4.43) getting the start for Durham against righty Tommy Hanson (0-1, 9.00) of the Knights ... The Bulls host Charlotte Saturday at 5:05 p.m. at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
