Bulls come up short as Bats light up late
A night after scoring a season-high 16 runs, the Durham Bulls got off to a fast start before sputtering offensively in a 5-2 loss to the Louisville Bats in International League action Tuesday night.
Neftali Soto’s two-run homer in the sixth inning off Bulls starter Mike Montgomery (3-1) put the Bats ahead to stay in front of 3,613 fans at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Louisville pounded out 12 hits, including three by Soto and Emmanuel Burriss and two each by Denis Phipps and Nevin Ashley, who spent the 2012 season with the Bulls.
Montgomery (3-1) made it through six innings. He gave up 10 hits while striking out four and walking one. Steve Geltz came on in relief and gave up one hit before giving way to Will Inman, who came off the disabled list on Monday.
Bats starting pitcher Yohan Pino (2-3) worked 6.2 innings, scattering seven hits while striking out four and walking two. Zack Duke shut the Bulls down over the final 2.1 innings to notch his second save of the season.
The start of the game was delayed an hour and 46 minutes because of rain, starting at 8:51 p.m. and taking 2:31 to play.
Once the game got going, the Bulls wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Tim Beckham singled but was out at second on a fielder’s choice by third baseman Cole Figueroa, and Jason Bourgeois followed with a double to the right-field corner. Vince Belnome singled in Figueroa, and Leslie Anderson’s line drive hit to center plated Bourgeois for a 2-0 lead.
Louisville pulled even in the fourth with a two-out rally after a double play. Mike Hessman drew a walk, and Soto moved him to third with a single to center. Denis Phipps’ drove in Hessman with an infield single, and the runners advanced when Figueroa threw wildly to first. Ashley topped a grounded midway to third and beat out a single to drive in Soto to tie the score.
The Bats took control in the sixth with Soto’s home run, his eighth of the season, and an RBI single by Jason Donald after a double by Ashley for a 5-2 lead.
The Bulls best chance to strike back came in the seventh, when Leslie Anderson led off with a single, Mike Fontenot ripped a one-out double to center and Beckham drew a walk with two outs. But Figueroa lofted a soft fly to left for the third out.
NOTES — Shelley Duncan’s seventh-inning home run Monday night made him the third Durham player to hit the snorting bull sign in left field twice, joining Midre Cummings (2004) and Aaron Holbert (1999). Duncan previously hit the sign on June 2 in a 7-4 win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. ... Duke men’s lacrosse coach John Danowski and Brendan Fowler, the most outstanding player of the NCAA Tournament, will throw out the first pitch of today’s game against Louisville (7:05 p.m.).
