Martin, Belnome power Bulls past Bats

Jun. 10, 2013 @ 10:41 PM

A night after struggling to put together hits to score runs, the Durham Bulls showed why they’re atop the International League South Division standings with a 5-2 win over the Louisville Bats on Monday night.
Bulls starter J.D. Martin (8-3) regained the IL wins lead outright, scattering six hits while striking out three and walking two in 6.2 innings.
Vince Belnome, whose on-base streak ended at 30 games in Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the Bats, bounced back with a pair of hits including a two-run homer in the third to put the Bulls ahead to stay.
Jason Bourgeois slapped a two-out single to left field off Louisville starter Pedro Villarral (1-4), and Belnome followed with his fifth home run of the season.
Durham plated two more runs in the sixth, as Wil Myers drew a walk and Leslie Anderson blasted his ninth homer for a 4-0 lead.
Jesus Flores led off the seventh inning with a home run to left off Bats reliever Nick Christiani. Cole Figueroa followed with a single, and Belnome added a two-out hit before Christiani struck out Myers to end the threat.
The Bulls had a shutout through 8.1 innings, but reliever Juan Sandoval struggled in the ninth. Jason Donald opened with a singled, then Sandoval hit Kristopher Negron with a pitch. A single by Konrad Schmidt loaded the bases, and Billy Hamilton’s groundout drove in Donald with the Bats’ first run.
After Kirby Yates came on in relief for the Bulls, Negron scored on a grounder by Corky Miller. But Yates, who recorded his third save of the season, got Neftali Soto to ground out to end the game.
NOTES — The teams meet again today, with Jake Odorizzi (5-1, 3.90 ERA) scheduled to pitch for the Bulls and Chat Reineke (4-3, 3.51) on the mound for Louisville. ... The Bulls have Wednesday off before opening an eight-game homestand with a four-game series against Indianapolis on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
