Indy tags Bulls’ pen with loss

Jun. 07, 2013 @ 10:44 PM

Durham Bulls starter Mike Montgomery was cruising through seven innings with a no-hitter Friday night against the Indianapolis Indians, then he walked the leadoff hitter in the eighth.

Three relief pitchers later, the Indians took the lead and held on for a 6-5 victory over the Bulls in International League action.
Montgomery threw 99 pitches and left with a 4-0 lead, but he gave up four walks while recording three strikeouts.
Jeff Beliveau (1-2), the Bulls’ third pitcher of the night, took the loss.
Jared Goedert drew the first walk of the eighth, and Juan Sandoval came on in relief of Montgomery. Tony Sanches greeted Sandoval with an RBI double to break up the no-hitter, and Brett Carroll singled to drive in Sanchez and cut the margin in half.
After recording a pair of groundouts, Sandoval hit John McDonald with a pitch. That brought on Beliveau, but he walked Alex Presley to load the bases.
Kirby Yates threw a wild pitch, allowing Carroll to score and the runners to advance. Josh Harrison reached on an error by shortstop Mike Fontenot, allowing McDonald and Presley to score. Matt Hague’s single drove in Harrison for a 6-4 Indianapolis lead.
A one-out double by Juan Apodaca and a throwing error by Indians reliever Duke Welker on a grounder by Jason Bourgeois cut the lead to a run, but the Bulls stranded a runner to come up short.
Leslie Anderson got the Bulls on the board in the third with a solo homer, his eighth blast of the season, and they padded the lead in the sixth with three runs. A leadoff triple by Brandon Guyer and an RBI single by Vince Belnome started the rally, and a two run homer by Shelley Duncan built the lead to 4-0.
Apodaca led the Bulls, who combined for 10 hits against three Indianapolis pitchers, with three hits.
