Bulls come back, beat PawSox at DBAP behind Yates
The Durham Bulls’ defense made things hard on reliable closer Kirby Yates in te ninth inning Tuesday night.
In an instant, third baseman Cole Figueroa turned things around with a spectacular play that helped Yates close the door once again.
Figueroa’s diving grab on a line drive with the bases loaded and one out extended Yates’ scoreless innings streak as Durham beat Pawtucket 5-2 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Having only allowed one run in 14 appearances this season, Yates got into trouble with a Hak-Ju Lee throwing error at short, a walk and an error on Curt Casali for catcher’s interference.
Though the Bulls led by three runs, Pawtucket had the bases loaded with one out.
“We needed to see how good Kirby Yates is,” Durham manager Charlie Montoyo joked.
Pawtucket’s Mookie Betts ripped a line drive that appeared headed to left field to drive in two runs, but Figueroa dived to his left and caught the ball while fully extended.
“That was huge,” Montoyo said. “It’s funny how the game works. When a pitcher is having a good year, people make plays like that.”
Yates struck out Garin Cecchini looking to end the game, pick up his 15th save in 15 chances and run his scoreless innings streak to 11 innings.
It was the second time Cecchini struck out with the bases loaded to end an inning in the game. Durham starting pitcher Nathan Karns got him to end the fifth inning with the score tied at 1.
Durham staked Karns to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Justin Christian doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Mikie Mahtook’s groundout Karns had allowed just one hit over the first four innings and retired nine men in a row entering the fifth inning. But the lead disappeared when Corey Brown homered to start the fifth.
Karns proceeded to walk the bases loaded before escaping with the strikeout of Cecchini.
The Red Sox used two hits and an RBI groundout to take a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning.
But Pawtucket helped the Bulls score four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead for good.
Robby Price walked and Hak-Ju Lee singled to start the inning. Ray Olmedo laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Red Sox pitcher Chris Hernandez’s throw to third was too late to get Price.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Christian hit a ground ball to third. But Pawtucket’s Garin Cecchini kicked the ball while attempting to field it and everyone was safe with one run scoring to tie the game at 2.
Mahtook and Nix followed with consecutive run-scoring sacrifice fly balls to put Durham ahead before Figueroa’s two-out RBI double gave the Bulls a 5-2 lead.
