Bulls steal Indy blind to back Odorizzi
Jake Odorizzi pitched five strong innings after a shaky start and the Durham offense stole eight bases in as many tries as the Bulls downed Indianapolis 6-2 at Victory Field here Thursday night.
The Bulls lead the four-game series that pits the International League’s top two teams — the Indians (41-21) have the best record in the IL by 1-1/2 games over the No. 2 Bulls (39-22) — two games to one.
Indianapolis leads the IL Central and Durham leads the IL South.
Josh Lueke and Kirby Yates finished up with three scoreless innings after the departure of winner Odorizzi (5-1).
Rich Thompson led off the game with a single and stole second. Brandon Guyer walked and one out later, the pair pulled off a double steal. Wil Myers drove in Thompson with a sacrifice fly and Guyer, who went on to steal third, was stranded when Mike Fontenot grounded out.
Indianapolis ran back into the lead back almost immediately. Alex Presley led off the Indians’ first with a single and stole second. Chase D’Arnaud walked. Presley went to third on a fly out, D’Arnaud stole second and Matt Hague walked to load the bases.
With two outs, Jared Goedert singled home Presley and D’Arnaud. Tony Sanchez followed with a single off Cole Figueroa’s glove at third, but Figueroa recovered in time to throw out Hague at the plate and end the inning.
In the third, Thompson again led off with a single and stole his 21st and 22nd bases of the season, his third and fourth of the game, and tied the game on Myers’ RBI single. Myers promptly stole second and scored on Shelly Duncan’s RBI double, chasing Indianapolis starter and loser James McDonald (0-1).
The Bulls made it 4-2 in the top of the fourth on back-to-back two-out walks to Jesus Flores and Thompson off relief pitcher Tim Alderson. Guyer’s RBI single brought home Flores.
The Bulls picked up Flores, a catcher who was on the Washington Nationals roster from 2007-2012, on Tuesday after he was released by the Dodgers’ organization.
Guyer got his second RBI of the night with two outs in the sixth, picking up Cole Figueroa, who’d walked leading off the inning. Guyer went to third on the play when Felix Pie mishandled his base hit in left, and scored on Vince Belnome’s RBI single.
Meanwhile, Odorizzi, recently optioned back to Durham from the parent Tampa Bay Rays, settled down after his shaky start, mowing down the Indians while racking up eight strikeouts in six innings, allowing no runs after the first, before being relieved by Lueke in the seventh.
Lueke pitched two scoreless innings — bringing his earned-run average down to 0.78 for the season — before giving way to Yates who closed with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
Yates had control issues, walking a pair of batters in the inning, but escaped without further damage when he struck out Jerry Sands on a 3-2 pitch with runners on first and second to end the game.
NOTES — In Triple-A All-Star Game online balloting, a pair of Bulls are leading all International League vote-getters at their positions. They are shortstop Tim Beckham and outfielder Wil Myers. Also, Vince Belnome is second among designated hitters. No other Bull is higher than fourth in the balloting. Voting ends June 26. ... Five Bulls each had two hits Thursday — Belnome, Thompson, Guyer, Myers and Duncan — and Guyer and Myers each drove in a pair of runs. Belnome raised his average to .344 with a 2 for 4 night. ... Myers and Guyer each had two stolen bases for the Bulls, complementing Thompson’s four.
