Bulls' Curt Casili finally gets taste of victory

May. 13, 2014 @ 10:45 PM

Durham Bulls catcher Curt Casili leads all of minor league baseball with a .496 on-base percentage, including a .474 mark since he was called up from Double-A Montgomery last week. But after five games behind the plate with the Bulls, Casili still hadn’t been a part a win when he’s played.

The 25-year-old California native was finally on the winning side Tuesday. Mike Montgomery (4-1) gave up two hits in eight innings as the Bulls defeated the Charlotte Knights 5-2 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

“Believe me, my teammates were letting me hear it,” Casili said. “I was glad to get that first one out of the way.”

Jerry Sands hit a two-run homer and Kevin Kiermaier went 2 for 4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to nine games as the Bulls (23-17), who were coming off a 2-6 road trip, started their eight-game homestand on a good note.

Montgomery had given up 10 earned runs in 10 innings since throwing 8.1 no-hit innings on April 26. He gave up a two-run homer to Josh Phegley in the first, but then retired 20 of the next 22 hitters — allowing only a two-out single to Matt Davidson in the fourth and a sixth-inning walk to Carlos Sanchez, who was then picked off first.

Montgomery’s performance was especially important for the Bulls, who needed the bullpen to throw all nine innings in Monday’s game when expected starter Emmy Romero was scratched.

“We needed that big time,” Montoyo said. “Our pen is so thin, that’s just what we needed – as a team and everything – a performance like that.”

After starting the game with a steady diet of fastballs, including one that Phegley hit over the Blue Monster, Montgomery used his breaking pitches more and threw inside to keep hitters off-balance after the first inning. He used his curveball as an out pitch to record seven strikeouts and threw 59 of his 94 pitches for strikes.

Durham took the lead with a three-run second inning, including Sands’ two-run homer to leftcenter and a two-out RBI single by Mike Fontenot.

The Bulls extended the lead in the fifth against Felipe Paulino (0-2), who was making his third rehab start for the Knights after being put on the 15-day disabled list with right rotator cuff inflammation by the Chicago White Sox. Kiermaier and Mikie Mahtook both doubled in the inning and Sands hit an RBI groundout.

Jeff Beliveau worked around a walk in the ninth to record his second save. He still hasn’t allowed a run in 18-1/3 innings this season, including 16-1/3 innings with the Bulls and two with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Knights (13-25) lost for the 12th time in 15 games.

NOTES — RHP Merrill Kelly (4-1, 2.09), who is coming off his first loss of the season, is scheduled to pitch for Durham today at 7:05 p.m. against LHP Charlie Leesman (1-2, 1.70). …White Sox RHP Chris Sale, who is 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA in four starts this season for Chicago, is scheduled to make a rehab appearance at the DBAP on Thursday. Sale was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 22 (retroactive to April 18) with a flexor muscle strain in his left arm.
