Belnome's triple, Anderson's walk-off single slay Knights
No doubt, Vince Belnome has earned a spot in the starting lineup with the International League All-Star team.
Belnome tripled to lead off the bottom of the ninth, then scored the winning run on a walkoff single by Leslie Anderson for a 6-5 victory over the Charlotte Knights on Thursday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
“I thought it was a pop up when I hit it,” Belnome said. “I knew I hit it good, but with the weather being humid and everything, I didn’t think it had a chance to be even close to where it went.
“I was going probably three-quarters (speed), then I saw (Jordan) Danks, the center fielder, running after it, I was like, ‘Wow.’ ... To get to third base with no outs, 90 percent of the time, a run’s going to score.”
Belnome and Cole Figueroa finished with a pair of hits each for the Bulls, but Mike Fontenot finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate as the Bulls swept the two-game series.
The victory was the 60th for the Bulls in 85 games, leaving them atop the IL South. Durham had fallen behind in the seventh inning but rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth to tie the score.
“This team is playing so well that we keep finding ways to win every night,” Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo said. “I don’t take it for granted, because it’s not that easy to win games the way we are.
“I thought (Danks) was going to get to (Belnome’s triple). When you think about it, it’s a tough play because of the rain and stuff. When the ball’s bouncing your way ...”
Charlotte got to Bulls starter Mike Montgomery in the first, as Steve Tolleson drew a one-out walk, went to second on a single by Jordan Danks, took third on a fly out by Mike McDade and scored on a wild pitch.
The Bulls wasted no time moving ahead of the Knights, with Figueroa leading off with a single followed by a walk to Tim Beckham. Belnome lofted a single to left field, where Charlotte’s Tyler Greene over ran the ball for an error to allow Figueroa to score. A groundout by Shelley Duncan moved Beckham to third, and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Anderson for a 2-1 lead.
In the second, Mike Fontenot opened with a single, went to third on a double by Chris Gimenez and scored on a grounder by Evan Frey to give the Bulls a 3-1 lead. But Charlotte starter Zach Stewart got out of the inning with a pair of groundouts to strand Gimenez at third.
Charlotte’s Steve Tolleson blasted his sixth homer of the season over the Blue Monster in left field in the fifth inning to cut the margin to 3-2.
The Knights tied the score in the sixth when Greene ripped a one-out double down the line in right, Lars Anderson was hit by a pitch and Greene scored on a groundout by Angel Sanchez. C.J. Riefenhauser came on in relief of Montgomery and struck out Jim Gallagher to end the threat.
Cody Puckett’s first Triple-A hit landed beyond the fence in left-center approximately 385 feet away from home plate to give the Knights a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning. Puckett had been hitless in 10 previous at-bats since being called up from Birmingham.
Charlotte padded the lead in the eighth when Hector Gimenez drew a leadoff walk, went to third when Fontenot booted a grounder by Greene and scored on a groundout by Sanchez.
The Bulls evened the score in the eighth, starting with Ryan Roberts’ first home run of the season. Fontenot followed with a single up the middle, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Gimenez and scored when catcher Hector Gimenez’s throw sailed into left field when he attempted to throw Fontenot out at third on a wild pitch by Charlotte reliever Santos Rodriguez.
After a leadoff walk to Puckett in the top of the ninth, Bulls reliever Cory Wade (3-1) struck out Mike McDade to set up the Bulls’ winning rally.
NOTES — The Bulls begin a three-game series against Gwinnett today with Merrill Kelly (3-0, 2.03 ERA) scheduled to start against the Braves David Hale (3-4, 3.42). Saturday’s game will have Durham’s Matt Buschmann (4-0, 2.56) on the mound against Gwinnett’s Joe Bisenius (3-1, 5.31). ...
