Gwinnett downs Bulls, 7-1

Aug. 26, 2014 @ 10:45 PM

One night after clinching the South Division, the Durham Bulls fell quietly to the last place Gwinnett Braves 7-1 on Tuesday night at Coolray Field.

The first 12 Bulls were retired by Zach Stewart (W, 7-4) before Jeremy Moore homered to begin the fifth. By that time, Durham (71-66) already trailed 3-0.

Nathan Karns (L, 9-8) surrendered a season-high 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings, as he took the loss against his former college teammate Stewart, both having concluded their careers at Texas Tech.

Stewart worked seven innings, striking out seven in his first appearance against the Bulls in 2014.

The Bulls will open the semifinals of the Governor's Cup playoffs next Wednesday at Columbus against the Clippers, who clinched the West with a Tuesday night win in Toledo. The Bulls won six of eight against the Clippers in the regular season, including a four-game sweep at Huntington Park.

Cory Burns worked 2 2/3 innings behind Karns, allowing just an unearned run in the sixth. Mayo Acosta pitched for the second time in his career, working a scoreless eighth inning, including a strikeout of prospect catcher Christian Bethancourt.

Durham managed just four hits in the game.

The Bulls, who lead the season series 12-8 over Gwinnett, play their final game against the Braves on Wednesday night with Alex Colome (7-5, 3.47) opposing Cody Martin (6-8, 3.62) at 6:35 p.m.

NOTE -- The Bulls will face IL West champion Columbus in the first round of the IL playoffs. Games 1 and 2 will be Sept. 3-4 in Columbus. The best-of-five series then moves to Durham starting Sept. 5.
