Bulls come back behind big bats, outstanding bullpen

Jun. 26, 2013 @ 10:47 PM

Shelly Duncan drove in three runs, Ryan Roberts two and Cole Figueroa the game-winner as the Durham Bulls bested Lehigh Valley 6-5 at Coca-Cola Field here Wednesday night.

The Bulls overcame a shaky outing from starter Matt Buschmann with an impeccable performance from the bullpen.

Winner Juan Sandoval (1-1) pitched two perfect innings, striking out two, and Josh Lueke closed it out with two more perfect innings, striking out three, for his ninth save.

While the homestanding IronPigs, Triple A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, made the most of their seven hits, Durham struggled all night to capitalize on the scoring opportunities generated by its 14 hits.

Lehigh Valley’s defense had something to do with that as the IronPigs turned a pair of double plays and leftfielder Darin Ruf twice held runners at third base who normally would have scored on base hits.

Durham led very early and — most importantly — late.

Brandon Guyer — who went 4 for 5 on the night — doubled to open the game and a single by Tim Beckham and one-out walk to Vince Belnome loaded the bases.

Back-to-back bases-loaded line drive singles to leftfielder Darin Ruf by Roberts and Duncan each plated a run, but in each case the runner on second was held up at third.

Mike Fontenot struck out and Chris Gimenez grounded into a force play to cut the rally short.

Durham starter Buschmann was unable to hold the lead.

The IronPigs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead.

Michael Martinez singled to lead off the bottom half of the first and took third on an errant pickoff throw by Buschmann. It looked like Buschmann might get out of the jam, but Ruf’s two-out single scored Martinez and Cody Overbeck and Josh Fields followed with doubles, Fields’ hit driving in the tying and go-ahead runs.

Lehigh Valley added a run on an RBI double by Cody Asche in the bottom of the second, but Durham tied it at 4 in the top of the third on a two-run homer by Duncan, scoring Belnome, who’d walked for a second time.

The IronPigs retook the lead 5-4 in the bottom half. Buschmann hit Steve Susdorf, Cameron Rupp singled him to third and Troy Hanzawa’s squeeze bunt plated Susdorf.

The seesaw battle took a breather until the Bulls grabbed a 6-5 lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

In the seventh, Roberts’ sacrifice fly scored Leslie Anderson, who’d doubled leading off. Another double led to the go-ahead run in the eighth. This time it was Fontenot leading off with a two-bagger and scoring on Cole Figueroa’s game-winning one-out RBI single.

NOTES — Buschmann was 2-0 with a save and a 1.59 ERA entering Wednesday’s game since getting called up from Double-A Montgomery. Prior to his promotion, he was among Southern League leaders in wins, ERA, and strikeouts. ... His shaky start saw his ERA “balloon” to 2.93. ... Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo has been selected as a coach of the International Team for the Sirius XM All Star Futures Game at the Mets’ Citi Field on July 14. Bulls pitching coach Neil Allen, a former Met, will also serve as a coach for the International Team. Former Met Edgardo Alfonzo will manage the team.
