Bulls escape with a victory

The Durham Bulls weren’t anxious to leave town without a win, and they proved it to the Buffalo Bisons with a 7-1 victory Monday night at Coca-Cola Field.
Bulls starter Mike Montgomery (4-1) went seven innings, scattering six hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Jeff Beliveau pitched the final two innings, striking out three and giving up one walk.
Brandon Guyer paced the Bulls’ offense with a 3-for-5 night and two runs scored. Jason Bourgeois and Mike Fontenot added a pair of singles each to Durham’s 10-hit attack.
The Bisons won the first three game of the series, including a 1-0 decision in 14 innings on Sunday, for the Bulls’ first three-game skid since May 6-8.
The Bulls had scored 37 runs against Buffalo in May during a series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park but posted just five runs combined in the trio of losses.
That wasn’t the case Monday, as the Bulls went ahead to stay with a pair of runs in the third inning. Brandon Guyer singled with one out, Tim Beckham walked Jason Bourgeois’ hit to left drove in Guyer. Vince Belnome doubled to right to plate Beckham, but Bourgeois was thrown out at the plate.
The Bulls put the game out of reach in the fourth, which started with Ryan Roberts and Chris Gimenez drawing walks off Bisons starter Ricky Romero (0-2) and advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Fontenot. Cole Figueroa singled in Roberts and Gimenez, ending the night for Romero.
Guyer greeted reliever Claudio Vargas with a ground-rule double to drive in Figueroa, and Beckham followed with his sixth triple of the season before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Bourgeois for a 7-0 Durham lead.
Montgomery lost the shutout in the fifth when Anthony Gose, Mike Nickeas and Jose Reyes singled to open the inning and cut the margin to 7-1. After Montgomery struck out Kevin Pillar, Mauro Gomez grounded into an inning-ending double play.
NOTES — The Bulls head to Lehigh Valley to open a four-game set today at 7:05 p.m. Durham is scheduled to have Merrill Kelly (1-0, 2.92 ERA) on the mound against the IronPigs’ Raul Valdes (2-2, 3.41).
