Bisons put away Bulls in series opener
Every time the Durham Bulls went on the attack, the Buffalo Bisons had the answer Friday night at Coca-Cola Field.
Bulls starter J.D. Martin (9-4), the International League leader in wins, took the loss despite pitching seven innings. Martin scattered eight hits while striking out four.
Bisons starter Thad Weber (2-1) pitched six innings, giving up seven of the Bulls’ nine hits while striking out five and walking two.
Ryan Roberts and Mike Fontenot had a pair of hits each for Durham, which was opening an eight-game road trip.
The Bulls took the lead in the second when Roberts led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout by Chris Gimenez and scored on a single by Fontenot.
Buffalo tied the score in the bottom of the second on doubles by Jim Negrych and Ryan Goins, the latter coming with two out and driving in Negrych.
In the fifth, Fontenot opened with a single, took second on a passed ball and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Craig Albernaz. Jason Bourgeois doubled in Fontenot and went to third on a balk, but the Bulls were unable to add to a 2-1 lead.
The Bisons rallied to regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Sean Ochinko singled before Jose Reyes and Kevin Piller had back-to-back doubles, the latter driving in two runs.
NOTES — Bulls shortstop Tim Beckham had his 12-game hitting streak come to an end Friday night after sitting out Thursday’s game. It had been the 13th-longest streak in the IL this season and was the second-longest active streak. ... The Bulls got starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi back after a spot start with the Tampa Bay Rays. Bulls righthander Mike Colome was called up to the Rays.
