PawSox Rip Bulls
Nothing doing for Durham against the guys from Pawtucket on Friday.
The Red Sox tore a hole in the Bulls and left another one on the scoreboard during a 7-0 win.
Pawtucket pitcher Anthony Ranaudo (6-4) was sizzling.
“The guy had a good lead, and he threw strikes and he got us out,” Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo said.
Bulls pitcher Enny Romero (3-6) struggled.
“That’s what you see with prospects, ups and downs, and right now he’s on the downs. So we need to get him back on track,” Montoyo said. “When you have an arm like that, you expect more of him.
“You get behind and you’re on the field a lot of time because he struggled with command and all that stuff, and then it’s just tough.”
Pawtucket catcher Christian Vazquez gave Ranaudo an early edge with a 400-foot shot over the center-field fence in the first inning, a three-run blast.
Vasquez did more damage in the in the third with a double that drove in a run and moved Travis Shaw to third. Carlos Rivero knocked in both and the Red Sox, just like that, were up 6-0.
“Our offense has been kind of spotty, so now you get behind 4-nothing, 5-nothing, 7-nothing, and it’s tough to recover from that,” Montoyo said.
The Red Sox were smacking Romero’s pitches pretty well. He’d given up eight hits and those six earned runs when Merrill Kelly gave it a go on the mound at the start of the fourth.
Kelly surrendered two hits to put runners on base for designated hitter Dan Butler, who walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases for Shaw, Pawtucket’s cleanup hitter who was batting .267.
Butler flied out to left field but drove in Mookie Betts.
That made it 10 Red Sox hits and, of more concern for the Bulls, seven runs for the visitors in the finale of a four-game set with Pawtucket
The Bulls entered the game 5-2 in their season-long, 10-game homestand and holding a 5 ½-game lead in the South Division of the International League.
Durham wasn’t able to get much of anything going against Ranaudo before he left the mound in the seventh inning. He struck out seven Bulls, didn’t walk any and allowed none to score. The Bulls squeezed two hits out of him.
Red Sox relievers Jose Valdez and Chris Resop climbed the hill in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, and finished off the Bulls in front of a crowd that had been announced as 10,164 fans who got some postgame fireworks that the home team definitely didn’t provide on the diamond.
