Duke's Paolini, Suri take fourth All-East Region honor
DURHAM — The Duke men’s golf team placed four members on the Division I Ping All-East Region Team as announced by the GCAA on Tuesday for the fourth straight season.
Seniors Brinson Paolini and Julian Suri were named to the team for the fourth time in their respective careers, while senior Adam Sumrall and freshman Mads Soegaard were first-time honorees.
Paolini, an All-ACC selection and the Byron Nelson Award winner in 2013, finished in the top 20 of all 11 stroke-play events including six top 10s and four top 5 finishes. He closed the campaign with a 71.8 stroke average and 16 under-par rounds, including eight rounds in the 60s.
Suri posted a 73.3 stroke average with seven top-20 finishes en route to his fourth straight all-region team selection. Sumrall posted a strong senior campaign with a 72.5 stroke average and three top-five finishes, including a victory at The Trojan.
Soegaard finished third on the team with a 72.7 stroke average to go along six top 20 finishes.
Duke signee Payne travels with U-20 squad
DURHAM — Duke incoming freshman Toni Payne currently is traveling with the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team in Gavel, Sweden, as it continues preparation for the qualifying for the 2013 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Payne will be with the U.S. squad through June 3.
USA will square off against Sweden’s U-20 Women’s National Team on Friday and Sweden’s U-23 Women’s National Team on Sunday.
Payne, who was recently named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Alabama, scored 47 goals and registered 35 assists this past season, leading Oak Mountain High School (22-4-2) to the Class 6A state championship game. Payne was the 2012 Birmingham News Player of the Year.
