Duke shoots down Air Force in NCAA tourney

May. 11, 2014 @ 10:52 PM

Fast and furious offense carried Duke on its first step toward what could be a second consecutive NCAA men’s lacrosse championship on Sunday.

The top-seeded and reigning national champions lived up to their seeding and their reputation, scoring seven goals over a six-minute stretch of the second quarter in a 20-9 rout of Air Force in an NCAA Tournament first-round game at Koskinen Stadium.

The Blue Devils (14-3) advance to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, where they’ll meet Johns Hopkins on Sunday at Newark, Del. Johns Hopkins (11-4) advanced Sunday with a 14-8 upset win at No. 8-seeded Virginia.

Playing its final game at Koskinen Stadium this season, Duke rolled to its 17th consecutive home win. The Blue Devils offense, which averages 14.5 goals per game, was at its best all day.

“We are really confident in our offense,” Duke sophomore attackman Case Matheis said. “When all our players are playing unselfish and playing Duke lacrosse, we are pretty confident in our players.”

It showed as Duke registered 52 shots to just 35 for Air Force (11-6). In the first half, when the Blue Devils took control of the game, they had 30 shots to Air Force’s 17. The Blue Devils, led by Brendan Fowler, also won 12 of 16 first-half faceoffs.

Because of that, Duke led 12-3 at intermission.

“Today you saw a whole bunch of examples of the right play,” Duke coach John Danowski said, “where we made the extra pass, where you could hear guys calling ‘one more.’ That means one more pass. There were a couple of times where we moved the ball three or four times and finished it on the back side in the second quarter because guys were playing right. They were playing together.”

Six different Duke players scored during that seven-goal flurry that turned the game into a Duke blowout. Only Kyle Keenan scored twice during that impressive stretch.

Air Force scored the first goal of the second quarter when Tommy McKee found the back of the net to cut Duke’s lead to 5-3. The Falcons had two shots to cut the deficit in half but one hit the post and another sailed high.

With 10:39 left in the half, sophomore Myles Jones started the Duke onslaught from the right side of the goal, firing a 12-foot shot past Air Force goalie Brett Dadiego. The 6-4, 240-pound Jones used his size and strength to lead Duke with three goals and five assists in the game.

“He’s quite a large human,” said Air Force head coach Eric Seremet, who played on North Carolina’s 1991 NCAA championship team and graduated from UNC in 1992. “He’s a big kid and you have to commit to your slides on him. I think we hesitated and it cost us.”

After Jones gave Duke a 6-3 lead, Keenan scored 38 seconds later. Keenan scored his second consecutive goal, this one of an assist from Deemer Class, at 8:35.

Just 56 seconds later, Will Haus’ unassisted goal put Duke up 9-3 and lead to an Air Force goal-keeper change. But Duke’s scoring rush continued.

Class took a pass from Jones to score at 7:05, Jack Bruckner added a goal at 5:46 and Matheis scored Duke’s final goal of the first half at 4:38 giving the Blue Devils a 12-3 edge.

“All week we worked on keeping our heads up, getting away from the selfish play,” Jones said. “Filling the net up as a team. You can’t get 20 goals by yourself or with one or two guys. Getting everyone involved was awesome.”

Matheis also had three goals for Duke as did national player of the year candidate Jordan Wolf. Keenan finished with two goals and three assists.

In addition to their offense, Duke entered the game insistent upon controlling ground balls to short-circuit the Falcons’ upset hopes. That mission was accomplished as the Blue Devils held a 40-28 edge.
