Dascenzo: Coach K rewards loyalty

To that say Nate James was in the right place at the right time would be an understatement.
Then again, James had a habit of being where he was needed most, especially on March 10, 2001, in Atlanta when his tip-in sent Maryland packing in an ACC Tournament semifinal as good as any before or after it.

The landscape of college football right now is somewhere between fair and unfair.
The report that the NCAA Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee has approved a 33rd and 34th postseason bowl game for the 2008 season made me think about two deserving Duke teams that obviously played at the wrong time.

The way Ron Shelton tells this story, he runs into Milt Pappas after the movie "Bull Durham" is released and Pappas is talking about how his arm had given out.

The movie “Bull Durham” will be a big deal this week, and it should be.
It made its debut 20 years ago and will be part of a celebration at the Annual Tribute Luncheon on Wednesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. I’ve lost count as to which person seemed to gain the most praise for performance — Susan Sarandon, Kevin Costner or Tim Robbins.

The bird glided against a pristine Carolina blue sky. From right to left, surfing the currents of the wind, I followed its course. I was looking skyward to something I've never seen. Before me, an albino red-tailed hawk danced in the wind.

Sooner or later, Duke had to lose Johnny Dawkins.
Stanford, like Duke, is difficult to turn down. In picturesque Palo Alto, near San Francisco, Dawkins will be expected to lend his meticulous touch to make sure the Cardinal is in the upper echelon of the Pac 10 as its new head basketball coach.

Nearly every college football coach I've met has told me that history means nothing.
Dick Sheridan once told me that looking back is not always the smartest idea. Sheridan's wisdom was well worth listening to.

The ground by the grave marker was dry.
The last name on the marker was the same as mine. You are humbled when you read your last name on a grave marker, trust me. Below the marker, a date of birth and a date of death were engraved. Life is unpredictable on occasion and too short when unpredictable.
