NCCU splits twinbill MEAC opener at FAMU as women win, men fall
Reggie Lewis scored 19 points — including half of Florida A&M’s final 16 points — to fuel a late rally and push the Rattlers into a 63-60 men’s basketball comeback over N.C. Central here Saturday night.
Lewis hit a 3-pointer with 1:25 to play to put the Rattlers within one, 60-59. His assist to Jamie Adams for a 3 gave Florida A&M a two-point lead, and Lewis made a free throw to end the game.
Adams added 19 points, and he and Lewis combined for nine 3-pointers.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the NCCU women snapped a four-game losing streak, opening Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for the first time since the school’s transition to Division I with a victory, as the Lady Eagles defeated the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers for the first time in school history, 71-64.
In the men’s game, the Rattlers (5-11, 1-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic) had trailed from the start, but NCCU allowed them back into the game and blew a 14-point lead after scoring just two points in the final 10:24. The Eagles (8-5, 0-1) missed 11 shots and turned the ball over four times in those final minutes.
Alfonzo Houston led NCCU with 16 points.
In the opener, Racquel Davis led NCCU, earning her fifth double-double of the season and topping her previous season-high of 21 points, collecting a game-best 27 while pulling down 11 boards.
In addition, Tiffany Gary collected her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Khyra Conerly (Oakland, Calif.) collected 10 points and a team-best three steals.
The Lady Rattlers opened the contest on a 7-0 run before NCCU head coach Vanessa Taylor called a timeout. A Morgan Jones 3 got NCCU on the board at the 18:09 mark.
But FAMU answered every NCCU challenge, taking a 34-20 lead with 5:26 left in the half and led 41-30 at the break.
NCCU cut the FAMU lead to three after a jumper from Conerly with 15:22 left to make it 45-42 and a putback by Davis tied it at 56. Davis’ old-fashioned three gave NCCU its first lead with 6:16 left and the Lady Eagles closed the game on a 13-6 run for the win.
