NCCU women fall in home finale

N.C. Central, coming off its second win of the season over the weekend, wasn’t locked in mentally Monday night, and it cost the Lady Eagles against S.C. State, NCCU coach Vanessa Taylor said.
“Today, I thought we took a step back,” Taylor said S.C. State beat NCCU 70-50 in the Eagles’ final home game of the season.
NCCU travels to Hampton on Thursday, wrapping up the regular-season portion of their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule.
NCCU’s transition defense wasn’t good against S.C. State, Taylor said, and that led to easy looks for the Bulldogs, who got 19 points from Tiara Knotts.
The Eagles had 19 turnovers leading to 28 points for the Bulldogs (14-16, 8-9 MEAC).
Aja Hoyle with 14 points and Chasidy Williams at 11 led the Eagles’ offense.
This is Taylor’s first season with NCCU (2-26, 2-13), and things obviously haven’t gone well on the court for her team.
Taylor arrived at NCCU after becoming the most successful women’s basketball coach in Johnson C. Smith history. She picked up the 300th win of her career with Saturday’s victory over Savannah State.
Toward the end of Monday’s game, NCCU trailed by 20-plus points, but Taylor still was coaching hard.
“We owe that to NCCU,” Taylor said. “Certainly, this is a privilege for us to have the opportunity to coach.”
