Bethune-Cookman keeps NCCU women winless

Add another jagged stone to N.C. Central’s rocky road.
The winless Lady Eagles lost for the 23rd time this season, falling to Bethune-Cookman 51-34 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on Monday.
“We knew this season was going to be tough for us, and we’re just fighting to get better every game,” first-year NCCU coach Vanessa Taylor said. “As their leader, I have to stay strong and let them know that there are some more games to be played.
“We can’t take time being frustrated and disappointed. We’ve got to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get ready for the next one.”
Terrenisha Hollis put 18 points on the scoreboard for Bethune-Cookman to go with 16 from Shakeyia Colyer.
NCCU’s Tisha Dixon (8 points) pulled down 12 rebounds.
“That was a highlight for us,” Taylor said.
Aja Hoyle and Chasidy Williams also scored eight points apiece for the Eagles (0-23, 0-10 MEAC).
Taylor said those eight 3-pointers Bethune Cookman hit were too many, but she took some satisfaction in the Eagles keeping the score from getting too far out of hand despite that.
The Wildcats (11-11, 6-4) scored 19 points off Eagles turnovers. That certainly didn’t help the situation, Taylor said.
“We have to value the basketball better,” Taylor said.
NCCU’s backcourt again was without freshman Amber Neely, who was on the bench recovering from a concussion.
“We’re missing her,” Taylor said.
