HEELS HANG ON
Once again, North Carolina has extended its NCAA Tournament run.
Freshman Trent Thornton was solid in his first career postseason start as the Tar Heels beat Louisiana State 4-2 Tuesday at the College World Series.
UNC (58-11), which hasn’t lost back-to-back games all season, is 3-0 in elimination games in the postseason. The Tar Heels will face either N.C. State or UCLA Thursday at 8 p.m.
Thornton (12-1), who had been used in relief since late March, allowed two runs on nine hits in seven innings while throwing a career-high 114 pitches.
Brian Holberton hit a two-run home run in the first inning -- only the second home run in seven games in Omaha this week -- and ACC player of the year Colin Moran had three hits to pace the offense.
UNC lost its opening game to N.C. State Sunday, and still must win three more games over the next four days to advance to the championship series.
