UNC-NCSU: Different venue, same intensity

North Carolina’s Boshamer Stadium and N.C. State’s Dail Park are separated by about 25 miles. Today, the two programs will have traveled more than 1,200 miles to the center of college baseball for an historic meeting.

The Tar Heels and Wolfpack face off today in the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park (3 p.m., ESPN2).

UNC (57-10) is the No. 1 overall seed after winning the ACC regular-season and conference titles — including an 18-inning win over N.C. State three weeks ago in the ACC Tournament.

But the Tar Heels have struggled in the postseason and needed to come back in elimination games against Florida Atlantic in the regionals and South Carolina in the super regionals to make it back to Omaha for the sixth time in eight seasons.

The Wolfpack (49-14) has hit its stride lately, winning 31 of the past 35 games and advancing to Omaha for the first time since 1968 with a 17-inning win over Rice, the longest super regional game in tournament history.

Both teams will send their aces to the mound. UNC junior Kent Emanuel was named the 2013 ACC pitcher of the year, while N.C. State sophomore Carlos Rodon was the 2012 ACC pitcher of the year.
